Cards sign reliever Blewett

The Cardinals announced they’ve signed reliever Scott Blewett to a minor league contract. St. Louis also announced a minor league deal with Sem Robberse, whom they non-tendered last week. Both pitchers will be in big league Spring Training as non-roster invitees, though Robberse won’t pitch after undergoing Tommy John surgery in May.

Blewett, 30 in April, logged a career-high 44 1/3 big league innings this past season. The righty divided that between three clubs: the Twins, Braves and Orioles. That included two stints in Baltimore, as the O’s traded him to Atlanta in April and reacquired him two months later. Blewett combined for a 5.48 ERA across 26 appearances. He missed bats on a decent 12.7% of his pitches but was unable to convert that into many strikeouts. Blewett recorded a below-average 18% strikeout rate while walking 9.3% of opponents.

A three-pitch reliever, Blewett leaned on his 84 MPH slider almost half the time. He sits in the 93-94 MPH range with his fastball and has a mid-80s splitter that he mixes in against left-handed batters. Blewett has yet to reach a year of service time but is out of minor league options

Another great signing in an "rebuild year".

Complaining about this is similar to yelling at clouds.

It's a zero risk, minor league deal, on a guy that I'm sure someone sees something positive with. Adding arms to the organization is never a bad thing.

Why add any old arms? They can't be wasting minor league slots with nobodies like this. That's not going to help. This guy is not good. And he's 30!

That 5.48 ERA is a little off putting. One wonders if there wasn't a better option in the minors that they already have signed. Not too many pitchers turn the corner at 30. They pretty well are what they are by then. More suffering for fans I guess.

Complaining about these minor league deals and non roster invitations to spring training don’t make any sense to me. I’d be happy with a half dozen of these types of deals. There are lots of innings to cover in STL and MEM. When you do all the math, you see that these type of pitchers are a needed part of every team, every year.

Yeah, I don't care whether it's just a minor league deal. It's a waste of time and a waste of money. This guy is a nobody.

So then he comes to camp, gets beat out by one of those guys, and doesn't get a full deal. So what.

The money is negligible. The time wasted cost us nothing in terms of what we REALLY need to go after. We haven't missed out on anything.

I wouldn't be shocked if minor league deals are farmed out to one of the assistant general managers.

Where's the buck stop? Farming out is a convenient excusing of a Bloom move...

I am fascinated to see the CT leeway/excuses he's given

Good lord, man. Do you work to be this miserable?

This isn't a move where the "buck stops". This is a MINOR LEAGUE DEAL. If our season is hinging on a MINOR LEAGUE DEAL then we've got bigger problems...no matter who offers them.

The point is, this is a nothingburger of a deal. LITERALLY EVERY TEAM makes them. Innings need to be covered, in St. Louis, in spring training, and in Memphis. I don't understand why you've got your knickers in a twist over it.

You don't waste minor league spots on has beens/never was guys like this. This is the same type of argument some on CT were making for keeping Hampson on the 26-man roster far too long. The argument was that the 26th man was not important. Yes, he is. You don't give away major league roster spots to non-major league players. He could not hit at all. Sometimes he ended up hitting cleanup in extra innings. That was so great.
