Absolutely have to do better than Pallante and Mikolas.

Those two alone would be addition by subtraction. Let's put someone in that can actually strike people out consistently. Enough with the pitch to contact batted ball luck pitcher. Bring up Whetherholt and put him at 2nd or 3rd depending on who's traded. Walker and Scott should both be better after getting used to major league pitching. If they're still struggling at the all-star break then send them down until they get better or a better option appears available. Noot needs to go. He's TO lite. Can't stay on the field and not really that great when he does. Herrera at catcher or DH. Contreras at 1st and occasionally DH. Then bring in or promote real talent for the bullpen. People that can be counted on to strike people out and not throw gas on the fire. This makes the Cards a playoff contender. Splurge and get a big name pitcher would be great also.

I’m keeping Scott whether he hits or not. Defense particularly up the middle defense is way too valuable. You accurately mentioned no K’s and too much pitchgo get it. to contact; why then get rid of Scott who can do just that-

If you have Bernal at catcher, Donovan at 2B, Winn at SS, and Scott in CF you have really strong defense up the middle. JJ can play 3rd.

Mikolas needs to go without any qualifiers. I don't want Pallante back in the rotation, but I could live with it.
But Mikolas should be G-O-N-E.

Neither Walker or Scott should be in STL come April. Walker should be in AAA (ops+ 24: 72, ops+ 25: 66) until his bat suggests otherwise and Scott's smaller sample size shows him to be even worse at the plate. Ops+ last yr: 72. This yr: 41.
He might have defense going for him but until/unless he can show an improved approach against mlb pitching, at the plate he's becoming a decent-hitting pitcher, at best.

I hear ya. My thought on Scott is this is the bottom line. As he ages, maybe he matures physically to become an adequate hitter.

If he is at all tradeable, I wish they would trade Pallante. if he is here, they will be tempted to put him in the rotation.

The question is Marmol's strategy of grinding down the starting pitchers to "save the bullpen".
There is a reason starting pitchers get paid more than middle relievers. It's because of their value to the team. Unless that strategy changes I don't have much confidence. We had enough in 2025 to make the playoffs with more sensible use of the pitching staff.

I’m the only Pallante guy here I think. I’ve seen several very well pitched games, so it’s not talent or potential that’s missing. The problem is what gets most pro athletes, consistency. He is currently our number five. That’s five innings of four run ball. On those days it’s solely up to the offense.
The number five game is a toss up anyway.

Scott's hitting journey shows he didn't handle AAA pitching all that well but was nonetheless promoted to STL, where his struggles have only intensified.
And Walker was promoted w/o much seasoning at AAA.
Perhaps Scott ends up as the guy you envision, but he risks flaming out absent a successful reboot; ditto Walker.
I thought Pallante had unlocked something in 24. In his best games this yr he was that guy (8 games that counted as a QS) but far too often was nuked out there. However, with MM gone, Gray possibly headed elsewhere, and Fedde gone, it would be difficult to also replace Pallante's 162 innings, so he's in the rotation unless Bloom works some trade magic.

That’s a good write. Yea I have hopes for Scott. Under my premise, we need Willy to hit, IH to hit, JJ to hit, and a right fielder who can thump.

I think of Wetherholt and maybe even Gorman as being better defensively at 2B than Donovan.

You just described a 7.20 ERA.

I guess they could always sign Lynn and Gibson . . . LOL!

Bloom will make similar signings in 2026. They worked in 2024.

Pallante will be in the rotation.
Someone as bad as MM (but not quite as overpaid) will be acquired in the offseason. This new pitcher will struggle in spring training, but then a single tear will fall from Saint Bloom's eye and land on the fella's shoelace...and he will be anointed the #2 starter.
