You will still see people point to fluke runs years ago when the game was different. The truth is the game has a serious competitive balance issue and more than half the teams can’t just drastically increase spending to fix it. They don’t have the revenues to justify it.
Thank you for typing .. that some teams 'don't have the revenues ' to spend like others.Stlcardsblues wrote: ↑02 Nov 2025 15:23 pmYou will still see people point to fluke runs years ago when the game was different. Thanks Cardstatman with the revised numbers. Yes , that makes the gap even wider. The Dodgers generate $334 M and DeWitt is getting $58M .cardstatman wrote: ↑02 Nov 2025 16:13 pm I"m pretty sure the Cards TV money dropped from $66M (old deal) to $51M (new deal) in 2025.
That just makes your case stronger.
The $58M+ is the average of the 2025-2032 new deal. It gets higher each year. Starts at ~$51M and rises to ~$67M by 2032.
The $76M was the average of the remaining years of the old deal. Started at $65.8M in 2025 and was going to rise to $86.6M in 2032.
I think everyone on this board accepts this reality. MLB itself is not accepting the reality that over the long run this is bad. Unfortunately, after having a WS that was one of the best ever with so many great players, baseball will probably think that it is actually the best thing that ever happened to the game. But, if many of its storied franchises, Cardinals, Pirates, Braves, Giants, Orioles and Guardians become irrelevant for a decade, that just can't be good for baseball.ramfandan wrote: ↑02 Nov 2025 17:19 pmThanks Cardstatman with the revised numbers. Cmon, you don't have to be a graduate of the Wharton School of Business to figure out which team has a HUGE $$$ advantage in spending .
That's the inbalance many discuss ad nauseum. Some just refuse to accept the reality .
Again, absolutely no one that's sane is saying they have to spend Dodger level money. But cutting payroll and not spending around 200 million is ridiculous at it's core. This team banked 3 million fans a year for decades and now they cry poor? Give me a break.ramfandan wrote: ↑02 Nov 2025 16:07 pmThank you for typing .. that some teams 'don't have the revenues ' to spend like others.Stlcardsblues wrote: ↑02 Nov 2025 15:23 pmYou will still see people point to fluke runs years ago when the game was different. The LAD have a deal with Spectrum TV that calls for $334 M in payments to the Dodgers annually.
The Cardinals TV deal generated $58-$60M in 2025 from FanDuel . Note: Previously DeWitt was getting $75Mfrom Bally Sports deal and they filed for bankruptcy. So a renegotiated deal with the current FanDuel resulted in the 23% decrease in TV revenues.
So there is a HUGE difference in monies the LAD get compared to DeWitt's Cardinals.
Each MLB team has individual TV deals based on their TV size markets for the 162 games.
Those who try to compare the NFL with MLB really don't understand the difference. The NFL plays one game per week for 17 weeks and have a national TV deal with Fox, ESPN , NBC . That TV deal is spread equally among all the teams. The small TV market Green Bay received same TV monies as LA and New York . Big difference in how the two sports receive TV dollars.
I used to be dead against a salary cap. My view has changed and this sport needs a cap and more importantly an extremely aggressive floor to force out bad owners.ramfandan wrote: ↑02 Nov 2025 16:07 pmThank you for typing .. that some teams 'don't have the revenues ' to spend like others.Stlcardsblues wrote: ↑02 Nov 2025 15:23 pmYou will still see people point to fluke runs years ago when the game was different. Can they outspend the Dodgers? No. Can they use the hundreds of millions they receive in revenue sharing intended to create competitive balance and field a better team instead of pocketing it? Absolutely. None of these guys are poor. Every team could have a $200 million+ payroll even without great fan support and still turn an immense profit. The Dodgers and Yankees, who everyone hates, are required to pay those cheap owners for the privilege of whipping their (bleep).Stlcardsblues wrote: ↑02 Nov 2025 15:23 pmYou will still see people point to fluke runs years ago when the game was different.
