In addition to the teams listed, I could see the Tigers- especially if they end up trading Skubal. I also wouldn't rule out the Blue Jays. They are losing some of their rotation to free agency this winter and more next year. They would have the option for 2027 with Gray if their rotation got too sparse. Their window is open now. (Detroit's too)

I sure like the Atlanta Braves as 1) they were interested in Gray a couple years ago and 2) Atlanta is even closer to Gray's Nashville Tn. than St. Louis to Nashville. (Note: Gray picked Cardinals due to geographic consideration to his home area )

Think Gray would approve Atlanta if the Braves wanted to do a deal with Cardinals.

I originally said he would go to Atlanta, and that is who I think he’d prefer, but I also wouldn’t rule out the Orioles. They need pitching and have young players available to trade. Mayo didn’t have a very good rookie season, but he could be a right handed power bat the Cardinals could use. The Orioles have others that would be nice as well.
I still think the Braves are the favorites to acquire him, but I don’t have any idea of who for.

If Giants do sign U. of Tenn. Vitello as manager , Posey acquiring Sonny Gray would give the rookie manager a seasoned veteran pitcher who has Tenn. ties himself . Gray played HS sports in Smyrna, Tn. and then went to Vanderbilt for college baseball .

Posey should add to his pitching staff and a vet like Gray could help.

If Gray is adamant about playing as close to home as possible, its Atlanta or Cincinnati.

Atlanta makes the most sense. Especially if they can work a deal where the option is turned into a second year at a reasonable salary of $15-20M. That might help the Cards to get out of this without eating a lot of money. It puts the Braves in a situation of not committing huge sums of money or term to get a decent pitcher who is a #3. If he agrees to say $15M on that second year, I could see a deal where the Cards put in $5M each year and they get a decent prospect back for him. They have 3-4 pitchers in the 11-20 range on their prospect list which I think would be an OK return.

Atlanta should be wary. Gray sweats excessively, affecting his grip. He puts up his worst stats in July. Atlanta is hotter than St. Louis so there is an extended period for him to sweat like Esteban Yan. Baltimore looks like a better fit.

I think he remains on the Cardinals. I am hopeful they can move him for something of value, but have my doubts.

Gray does not perform as well when the weather is very hot and humid. He could excel in a cooler environment like the Bay Area or really anywhere on the west coast.

I don’t see the point in trading him now.

1. The Cardinals will need to pay a significant portion of his salary to move him.
2. Even if they keep Gray, right now they need to
add 2 starters because they really shouldn’t count on Pallante. Trade Gray and they need 3 starters.
3. They won’t get more than a lottery ticket in trade.

I think people are making too much of the location thing. He's played for the Twins, Yankees, As and Reds. I'm sure it's a big consideration but I don't think it will be as important as some think. I'd bet he'd jump at a chance with the Dodger, Phillies, or other top team. So I'll throw out a wild card, Astros. Valdez is a freeagent, so they may need to replace him. Even with Valdez, they need another good starter.

I don’t get the playing close to home part. Does Sonny commute each day from Tennessee?

Anybody that wants above average pitching and willing to spend some cash. Almost all teams in baseball.
