I was hoping that Cardinals could get him . Living one hour from Knoxville, I have watched him closely the last few years.
Thought he would be very good with a Cardinal rebuilding franchise. He is aggressive, unapologetic , and quite talented.
Some of you may have seen Vitello during the MLB draft day shows. They used Tony Vitello to critique the players drafted. Last year's Cardinal 1st rounder P Liam Doyle played for Vitello .
Vitello became the first college baseball coach to crack the $3M mark in annual salary as Tenn. has tried to keep him long term.

Hate to say it but not a fan. Probably responsible for some of the most unsportsmanlike baseball ever.

Former assistant at Missouri. Surprised a MLB team is hiring a college guy but he might work out.

I coached against his dad for years, and him when he was in HS. His dad was a great high school coach. I know that he has a solid foundation to draw upon. Does that translate to MLB? I'll have to wait, but knowing the family, I'd bet this will turn out to be a good hire. Don't forget that at Tennessee, he made a very good program exceptional.

There is no question about that . It really put Tennessee on the national map for baseball programs.

Sometimes the source for these anonymous leaks is the person himself or his agent just to get his name associated with a job and raise his profile.

Or as you said , the interest is real but his agent wants time to see if Tenn .will offer even a 'higher ' contract to retain him.
However, the Vols did make him the highest paid manager with $3M per year. Would Tenn. really want to go higher to retain him ?

This report says Vitello may have been Posey's 2nd choice .. Former Posey teammate (and Texas front office guy ) Nick Hundley may have been Posey's 1st choice but Hundley has small children and due to family considerations turned down the Posey overture.

Another story reports that Vitello met with Posey in Denver earlier when the Giants had a series with Rockies.

College coaches have not fared well in MLB. Murphy’s first stint in SD did not go very well. For one, these are grown men, not kids. 162 games is a LOT longer than a college season. Your rotation must be deeper than 3-4 games. I wish him well, but the odds are against him.

So, again, we aren’t going to hire an experienced MLB manager? More OJT types? This oughta go over bigly with season ticket crowd , but III willsave some shekels and that is what it is all about for this ownership.. Another ipad whiz is on the way. Enjoy.

Have you ever heard of anybody turning down a managerial job in MLB to coach in college?

What is unique in this case is that it is unprecedented that a MLB team would consider hiring a guy with NO minor league coaching experience.
Take Pat Murphy (Brewers ) He was at Notre Dame and Ariz. St for 15 years. He did have minor league gigs and then Craig Counsell (brewers at the time ) hired Murph (who was his college coach at Notre Dame ) to be his bench coach in Milw.
In Vitello's case, he has NONE of that background . His own dad was a baseball head coach guy .
maybe not a good analogy but Vitello right to pros from head college job is akin to Cincinnati Moeller HS football coach going from HS to be head coach at Notre Dame. Faust came to ND in 1981 ? and was out by 1985

I am taking a guess of what San Fran may pony up to sign Vitello. While I have not seen any number speculated , I go by two factors.

1) Vitello is currently the highest paid college head baseball coach a $3M per year
2) Cubs Craig Counsell signed with the Cubs a couple years ago for $8M per year on 5 year deal (highest MLB paid manager ever )

So taking those two numbers into consideration, $5.5 M would split the difference so my guess is that Giants would need to pay him $6.5 M (probably on a 5 yr. deal ) with maybe some escalator options if Giants go to various postseason levels. Bonus for Division series win, NLCS win, WS appearance etc.

So 5x $6.5M = $32.5 M something in that neighborhood .. if he gets a 6th year then he could get a total of $39M
a lot depends on the buyout if Giants want to can him after 3 or more years .

Even if he doesn't win in MLB, he should have no problem returning to Div. 1 college baseball for big bucks (his current $3M ? based on his previous success at U. of Tenn.
So not much of a risk if he leaves for MLB.

I could see a coaching job of some kind but not a MLB manager job. Perhaps low minors managerial job. I strongly suspect he or his agent were behind this rumor.
