Top of the 9th .. Padres trailing 3-1 after solo HR .. next batter goes to 3-2 count and next pitch taken low ... Ump punches out the batter
With ABS, that chllenge would have been a walk ... runner on 1st nobody out with tying run coming to the plate. Instead without ABS ,it was 1 out and nobody on base.
Sure changed the final inning . Wait til next year !

Horrible at bat.
A fundamental of hitting for a century was this: With two strikes, you protect the plate and don't put it in the ump's hands.
This should be a lesson learned, but every moron is going to (buzz) and moan about ABS and call for more technology to destroy the game

So when the 3-2 pitch is 6 inches below your knees ,you are still supposed to swing at the pitch because you have 2 stikes on you . OK
That low pitch wasn't close to the zone box.

How does getting calls right destroy the game? lol

Thing is if its called ball four I'm sure he immediately comes out of the game and isn't in there to put another man on base on the HBP, so we'll never know if it would have amounted to anything.

Keller was terrible and did not deserve that K. Hit the next 2 batters and pulled.

The primary reason that has been standard for a century is no longer necessary and being removed beginning next year. There will be pros and cons to using an automated zone, but the pros will outweigh the cons.
In the context of tonight’s rules it was a terrible at bat though.

Shildt should have had one of his epic meltdowns. He could've been out there flailing his chicken arms looking like an obscene Barney Fife. That would've been more entertaining than the game was.

He wouldn't come out immediately, because that was only the second batter. So he would have had to face the next batter that he hit. I'm not sure when Kitteredge got up in the inning, but he might not have been ready until the 4th batter was faced. It should have been bases loaded with no out. Umpire blew the call that probably cost the Padres the game and defintiely a chance to tie the game.

It's the major leagues the umps are supposed to get the calls correct. This isn't High School umpiring. The ball wasn't even close to being a strike, so you need to adjust your strike zone by 2 inches all the way around?

Teams only get 2 challenges per game. Unlikely they would have a challenge left in the 9th inning. MLB can't get anything right.

Where is has been tested, batters have quickly learned to save the challenges until the late innings.
Also, challenges are unlimited as long as the batter wins the challenge.
It is limited to only 2 lost challenges.

FWIW i think the Cubs kinda got jobbed on the two replays in the 8th. Also, really bad decision to start Darvish in that game.

I thought for the most part the umpiring was bad in the games I saw.
I certainly agree regarding the Padres in the 9th. That pitch missed the zone by 3 inches.
Also in that game Arreas f’d up by not running hard on a high liner to Swanson who dropped it. He would have scored on the 2-out double.

The pitch was an obvious ball. The ump blew the call.
