Scoring question

Guardindians first baseman Noel was awarded an error for a missed catch on a ground ball. The ball careened off his glove to the second baseman, who threw it back to Noel in time to get the runner, but Noel's foot was off the bag rendering the runner safe. According to MLB.com, Noel was awarded an error and an assist. What the hell was the assist for?

It seems to be Noel could have been awarded two errors on the play. Players have been awarded two errors on one play before. I recall a rightfielder dropping a fly ball (error 1), retrieving it, then throwing the ball into the stands trying to get the runner out at third (error 2).

What's your call?

you can't get two errors on 1 total base

Simple on the assist he deflected the ball on what should have been an out

He gets the error for not having foot on base when ball clearly beat runner

3-4-3 and E3

Easy. Obvious. Correct

Remember reading from long ago if a fielder makes a good thow and the 1B drops it. The fielder is credited with an assist on what should have been an out.

But the error was for a dropped throw, which was the deflection. This means he got an assist for the very same act that earned him an error. If this is obvious and correct then I can add this to the growing list of the ways MLB is screwed up.

Goes for any fielder at any position. If he makes a throw that would have gotten the runner out, but the receiving fielder causes a safe call due to an error, the first player gets an assist.

Don't want your head to asplode, but he should get credited with TWO fielding chances on that play also.
