The best and worst of Mo

Best - 1) Matt Holliday
2) The 2011 Bullpen deadline restructuring
3) Lance Berkman
4) Bringing Back Pujols
5) Paul Goldschmidt
Worst - 1) trading away Sandy A and Gallen for Ozuna. While awful, this only happened because Oscar Taveras killed himself and we were desperate for a middle of the order bat. Who know's what the team looks like if those events never happened.
2) Dexter Fowler
3) Mike Leake
4) Mikolas/Carpenter extensions
5) Ty Wigginton

12) Lack of org training coaching resources for prospects
Fixed it for you, most of his successes were early when riding the coattails of Jocketty/TLR teams

I was with you on Schildt but I don't think we will ever know what actually happened. I've heard it wasn't even a baseball issue, and was more of an HR issue, but I don't know what transpired. It sucked losing him for sure though.

Bernie once reported that Shildt went into Mo's office after the season and demanded he acquire the type of players Shildt felt he needed to win a WS.
Mo took offense, felt Shildt over stepped his bounds and canned him.
Shildt may have indeed been out of line but Mo's ego was always a problem.

If that's what happened, then Mo is 100% to blame. Some guys on 101 made it sound like it was a non baseball related issue and didn't want to go into details about it.

I would say his whole last season was awful also. He kept Fedde and Helsley instead of trading them while their value was at its highest. If Fedde is gone mcgreevy is up all season and if he was anything but a complete disaster the cards probably make the playoffs. Then his 1,2,3 goals of the offseason were to trade arenado which he failed at just an awful offseason for mo in his last season

5) Ty Wigginton doesn't belong in the top 20. A $2.5 mill one year deal is nothing, so they gave him 63 PA that's basically a no harm, no foul deal. The two previous years Ty was a part time player with some power. Not sure anyone could have predicted that he would go from decent bench to trash overnight. Not trying to say Mo didn't make mistakes, just that this really wasn't one them it.

Let's not forget what else happened with the Ozuna trade: Mo came home from Miami saying Yelich wasn't available, so he had to settle for Ozuna...who had known shoulder issues.
Then the Marlins traded Yelich.
To the Brewers.
And he won MVP.

The Cardinals and DeJong agreed to a multi-year contract extension Monday that could keep the shortstop under team control through 2025. The deal, announced at a press conference at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium, guarantees DeJong $26 million over six seasons, and includes club options for 2024 and 2025. The options could bring the total value of the deal to $51.5 million, according to sources.

Looked like a bargain at the time. A SS playing decent defense and hitting 30 homers.

This. While the Wigginton signing looked like a bad idea the moment it was signed and proved to be just that, it was peanuts in the grand scheme of things.
Beltran signing needs to be #6 or right around there.
I know everybody wants him gone but the Arenado trade was a good move. It was always going to go downhill and end badly, but ideally the rest of he roster would help balance that out. We got a good season (4.3 fWAR in 2021), a great season (7.2 fWAR in 2022), two decent seasons (2.7 and 3.2 fWAR in 2023 and 2024, respectively), and then a bad season this year.

So the downward spiral of Cardinals baseball started because a partying lazy rookie who was benched to correct his huge swing, didn’t play at end of season, didn’t start in playoffs, and made no real positive offensive contribution when he did play that year…..killed himself in the offseason…..
Imagine if a player who had actually contributed offensively had died…….the team might have folded
