Modern hitting approaches are willing to give up outs via strikeout in order to go for more hard hit balls when they are put in play. The Cardinals pitching staff has, for years, not taken advantage of opposing teams being willing to give them outs via strikeout.

Look at it this way. The low walk rate has saved them. Imagine the stats if they were 5th worse in BB.

I’d say the lack of walks has indeed benefited the staff.

The solution: Sign Harrison Bader to a multi year deal!

Because of lack of velocity hitters put the ball in play before two strike counts. Pitchers to contact the Mo mantra. A more knowledgeable manager might have had input as to how dumb that is in this era.

Strategy works best when your staff has a better command of the pitches they throw for strikes. Too many times a struggling pitcher will end up throwing a strike right down the middle of the plate.

Agreed. The quantity of quality stuff within a pitching staff is what counts. Subscribing to the "throw it over the plate and let your defense work" might have been fine and dandy 20 years ago. The majority of hitters in the game today are trying to hit the ball to the Arch regardless of the count/situation. Strikeouts are perfectly acceptable within the industry so long as you can pair them with 20-25+ HRs.

Pitching coaches/staffs have to adapt or they end up as one of the primary reasons their team ends up in fourth or fifth place within their division.

The lack of walks still indicates we have above average command compared to where the rest of the league is now. I just think, regardless of command our pitch quality is too hittable ir guessable.

Ive seen dozens of times this year where an opposing hitter will take a low outside strike the opposite way for hit with a two strike count.

It’s a good idea and really not in the wrong location, but just not enough enough zip or something
