The Keepers

Good morning.

Can we say we have now had our first assessment year in the reset. Remember- cut contracts first- Goldy. Wanted to cut Arenado, didn’t happen: yet. Then play a season to see who sticks.

Libby- a future number three
Mcg- a future number three
Pallante- a future number five
Leahy- a starter???
O’Brien- works in the pen
Donovan- my second baseman
Winn- win win
JJ - goes to third. Think George Brett
Herrera- left field.
Church- CF
Burleson- to first. Lacks that position power.
Willy- will see his brothers success and want some- he waives NTC.
Nolan. Waives NTC.

That’s it.

I’m trading bundles to solve three positions-2 x TOR studs. One power hitter preferred right field. This all will not happen this off season. the rebuild is a three year process.

This makes me a .500 or better team in year two of the reset.

I think you’re right about TOR not happening for 2026. I also like that you are locking Donovan at second.

JJ goes to third or possibly short. For the right deal Winn is in my trade package. If so JJ to short.

Big hole in RF. Walker needs to start out in minors in 2026. I’m hoping some deal brings in power bat to fill that hole in 2026.

IH to left. Maybe. He has to prove to me he can play the position.

What are you doing with Gorman, Scott and Sagesse?

Great question. You gotta give to get. That TOR or bat this off season May come from that group.

The other option is going after Tucker, that’s just money.

I don’t know anything about trade value but would be surprised if Gorman, Scott and Sagesse get you a lot. That’s why I have Winn on my trade package. A wise man once said “ you gotta give to get”. He and Donovan are most valuable ignoring those with NTC. Which begs the question should you wait until after 2026 for big deal. Do you risk injury or poor performance from Winn or Donovan? If WC or Gray waive their NTC the trade possibilities expand. I guess my big question is do you risk waiting until 2027 to make the big deal?

Another fine observation. And that’s the trick. When. Back to cliche- timings everything.

I’d add in Svanson.
He has been impressive so far and could be a potential closer if that continues.

Gray - Waiting to hear if he waives the NTC
Libby- #3
Mcg- #4
Leahy- shot at starting from what we're hearing
??????

JoJo, O’Brien, Svanson- build a pen' around them

WillyC - 1st base
JJW - 2nd base
Winn- SS
NADO/Gorman (DH)- 3rd (unless NADO waives and BDWJr eats 50% of his deal)

C - Crooks/Pages until one of the kids below are ready

Herrera - LF/DH
VSII- CF
Burleson (LF also)/Walker - RF

Saggese - SUP
Church - 4th OF'er

Pallante- traded/bullpen/DFA

Gorman/Walker on their "last chance" w/the Cardinals in 2026 (if they even last the whole season).

I didn’t mention Gray as I was long terman the reset. I am counting on Willy to waive. Gorman and Walker can go.

Gorman Scott Walker Saggese- four players Bloom has no love for.

I don't see Willy waiving, he's made that clear but I guess there's always a 1% chance.

VSII has some upside given his superior defense and base stealing ability, Bloom may want to see if they can develop him.

I have no problem moving on from JAG's like Saggese or Church. If they go, "meh".

Gorman & Walker, as I said, are on their last legs here in 2026 (if they even last the whole seasons), sink or swim time for both.

Even the opposition media have the ‘book’ on Walker.
During Brewer series they mentioned… you can throw the outside slider and he chases it. Always calls timeout after 2 strikes.
Will take strikes early in count.
They have the ‘book’ on him. Doesn’t scare anyone. Views as nearly automatic out each at bat.

Basically what we have all been watching for quite some time. He needs a hitting guru to reset his swing and approach and then to spend time in AAA to gain confidence. If he hits there he comes up. Otherwise.... I suspect he is on the trade block, but doubt he has any real value. Unless there is some org who looks at him and thinks they can fix him. Gorman is also going to have to show some serious improvement or he is gone. He hits mistakes to the moon, and now and then he will get on a little run where you think he has figured it out... but nah, back to the same old stuff, and he has zero defensive value. But his leash is a bit longer than Walker's at this point.

For me, the only keepers are Winn and JJ. I build my infield around them. I like Donnie, and he is a great piece to have, but he is one of the 2 or 3 most valuable trade chips. Burley, Noot ... meh. If they can get good value in trade, then take it. I hope WC will waive his NTC, and same with Nado, but doubtful about either. Unless there are serious moves in the off season that bring excitement, next season will look a lot like this one. Especially if they allow Marmol to continue. They need a serious culture shift and a new manager would help. Back to fundamental baseball. We are not going to out slug anyone. So we need to play very sound fundamental ball on both offense and D. That has slipped. Smart ABs, move runners, hit sac flies, smart baserunning etc... Hit all the cut offs, make all the routine plays, throw the freaking ball from 3B to first consistently (I am talking to you Mr. Gorman), etc.... A manager who tightens what ship there is......

don't kid yourself. 2026 is year 4. 2023 was year 1 of the selloff. The org is moving at a glacial pace compared to some worst to first turnarounds by BOS in a single year.

The first thing this off season is to rid themselves of Marmol and Blake and reset the direction in the dugout. Good luck with trades... we know there will be no real signings of note. Not gonna happen if it costs more than something like the Maton deal.

Just guessing:

Contreras - 1b
Wetherholt - 2b
Winn - SS
Arenado/Gorman - 3b
Herrera/Burleson LF
Scott - CF
Walker/Burleson - RF

Pages/Crooks - C

Gorman, Burleson, Herrera take turns at DH

Gray
Liberatore
McGreevy
Addition
Q. Mathews

Graceffo
Svanson
Romero
O'Brien
Pallante
??

This would absolutely be Mo's roster if he weren't 2 weeks away from termination. Plus probably fill in the "addition" with a 1 year incentive contract for Mikolas, who honestly has been better than Pallante, though still not good enough on the whole.
