Not your father's shortstop

The shortstop position today now leads the majors in hits and runs. Twenty years ago it was just beginning to show signs of its ascension in offense, but the further back in time you go the weaker the position is on offense.

historically, and in general, the SS position was a defense first position. things have definitely changed
and of course, there's always the exception

Its gone from defense first to best all around athlete. The elite ones Give up nothing on defense, but also bring elite speed, power, and hit tools.
Modern bodybuilding, reflex training, skills drills regimens etc have taken the ceiling higher than previous generations could dream of.
