40 man crunch

OK so looking at the 40 man, I would think:
Alcala
Fernandez
Munoz
Roycroft
Veneziano
Fermin
Hampson
Koperniak
Siani
Can be dropped off with no significant damage to the team. That's also with guys like Nado, Donny and Noot as trade bait in the offseason.
Why are they being so careful? Not like it's a 40 man of no doubt stars in every spot.

Can't believe Bernal is already eligible. There are only a few on the list I would be worried about losing, mainly towards the top. Namely, Bernal, Crooks, Baez, Hjerpe and Jordan. Maybe Church too if they dont keep him on

There it is. That top 14 explains why the Cards are in no hurry to bring up JJ early. I would look for some trading this winter.
Nice job cardstatman.

Pitchers can be stashed on rosters easier i.e. in the bullpen. So Hansen and Mautz should be added to your list. Church has a nice tool set and I can't see them dropping him off. That totals 8 players, 7 more since Church is already on it. They have 38 players on it currently. When Zach Thompson comes off the 60 day, they need to add him as well. That is 8 more players. Falling off, Mikolas, Alcala, Munoz, Robberse, Hampsen, Koperniak and Sianni are 7 easy guys. That gets them to 39 which seems OK as it gives them room to pick up a rule 5 draft pick.
Bubble guys, Fermin, Roycroft, King, Fernandez, Hjerpe and Roby. I know the last 2 guys are considered decent prospects still, but they are always hurt. Seems like they have room to bring JJ up even with the so called crunch...

Excellent info. That seems like a lot but I really have no idea but that’s a lot of 4 to 5 year players either stuck in the organization or not talented enough to make it. Whitey is rolling over in his grave.

You don't automatically have to protect the top 14 just cause they're ranked high in the org. Nobody is going to take e.g. Randal Clemente or Jose Davila in the Rule 5. Probably not Rincon, Love, Racjic or Hansen either. So now we're down to only 8 that need to be protected.

Only 4-6 guys on that list will ever even see St. Louis.
Bloom will take a weedwacker to that list and easily whittle it down.
(And no reason JJW shouldn't already be on the 40 man and playing for the Cardinals today)

You can lose them in the minor league portion too. Most of these aren’t AAA. They are just as lost that way and don’t have to play in the majors next year. You devalue these guys and I think out of ignorance. I understand the organization’s reluctance.

It doesn't have their levels, and at least a couple of them are wrong (e.g. Rajcic is now AAA).
So you don't know something you're lecturing me about, while saying I'm doing it out of ignorance?

Who in their right mind would trade for Nado's contract? As much as I'd like to never see him in a Cards' uniform again, the best we can hope for is him to come off the IL and return to a semblance of himself for at LEAST a few weeks. If he can show some power has returned, maybe, MAYBE, some team would take a flyer on him, although it'd likely be just a salary dump for Stl.

Not lecturing; I accused you of devaluing the farm because you are willing to put them at risk for bringing JJ onto the 40 man before Rule 5 is sorted.
All 14 of the players level was listed. That Rajcic is AAA doesn't mean he shouldn't be protected; only that he is subject to ML Rule 5 draft rather than minor.
Sorry that you felt insulted by my accusation but I meant it. I follow those players all year long and feel they will impact the ML team at some point. I too would like to see JJ play this year, but respect the organization's decision to protect the Rule 5 eligible.
