Multiple MLB teams have signed young guys to 8 yr. deals

Multiple MLB teams have now signed young players to eight-year contracts, a trend that has gained momentum in recent seasons. The contracts often buy out a player's pre-arbitration and arbitration years in exchange for long-term financial security.
The Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox are two recent examples of teams signing such extensions:
The two latest were Red Sox Roman Anthony 8 yr. $130M and Orioles signing C Samuel Bassalo 8 yr - $67 M after a couple games in his debut.
Two years ago , the Brewers signed 20 year old rookie Jackson Chourio to a 8 yr.- $80+M deal
Believe NLB Central ran a graphic are on their TV show indicating that there has been at least a half dozen guys age 21 or younger that have signed these 8 yr. deals (buying out arb years plus a couple free agency years ).
Do you think the Cardinals (under Chaim Bloom ) will ever offer an 8 year deal to a young player they deem worthy ?
PS Found the list : These are the players that signed extensions with LESS THAN 100 Days Service Time
Roman Anthony 8 for $130 , Jackson Chourio 8 for $82M , Bassalo , Kristian Campbell 8 for $60M , Ceddanne Rafaela 8 for $52 M , and Colt Keith 6 years for $28.6 M
BTW Some of these deals have esclator clauses where the total amount could be higher .. Bassalo could go to $88.5M
Chourio has some clauses that if he wins MVP during the deal , escalators kick in ... Also Brewers have 2 team option years for Years 9 & 10 where they could retain Chourio or buy him out for 2+M

It's a calculated risk, but it's probably smart if you have a limited budget. If they turn into a superstar you come out way ahead on a player you probably wouldn't be able to resign anymore.
If they don't reach their potential even a 2 WAR player is an ok value as the salary escalates.
If they completely flame out, it sucks, but it's easier to eat $10-15 million of dead money than like an Anthony Rendon contract.
Maybe the Cards will try to do it with Wetherholt.

It is absolutely a business model that the Cardinals should lean into.
If you are projecting a prospect to be:
1) a starting pitcher
2) your closer, or
3) a full-time starting position player, or at least the LH side of a starting platoon
you can make a case for want to lock them up through about age 30 as cheaply as you can, which means getting a long term deal done as early as possible.
It's pretty much the only way a team can get significant "value" on its roster.

Winn should be the guy they approach this offseason. Wetherholt too, if they really believe in what they have in him.

I agree w/the lockdown business move.
BUT
Not until the player has proven himself in MLB (too risky what the O's just did).
Sometime in their 3rd season (IMO) is the right time to lock them down.
M. Winn could be a candidate in 2026.

Winn will not be an impossible guy to sign. He’s a defensive SS. Won’t demand a record breaking deal. Wetherholt on the other hand might be an elite hitter. That’s the type of player to sign to this type of deal.

Just my two cents - it would not shock me if Bloom looked for a big return from Winn and moved forward with Wetherholt at SS.
I don't EXPECT it... just think it's in the realm of possibilities.

But if you wait for them to "prove" themselves, you end up paying A LOT more. So you are trying to take little risk, but you'll be paying so much at that point that the "value" you might get will also be small.

If Bloom wants to land anything of significance it will require moving one of Winn Donovan or Hererra. The roster is loaded in DH LHOF and MI. There are like 46 players for 40 man and they rush loosing several if they don’t protect them. I think several moves need made and the only 2 not in talks are Doyle and Wetherholt
