What is wrong with Tommy Pham?

This is an absolutely unstable individual.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yl0_WgI-n6I

“He didn’t say a word to me. I didn’t say a word to him. He just looked like he wanted to have a fight,” Heineman said. “I asked the umpire on the 2-0 pitch, ‘You got that just off? It was pretty close right there.’ He looked at me and didn’t say a word, then he bat flipped and looked straight at me. I just put up my arms and he walked towards me. I don’t really know.”

Tyler Heineman told us that he didn't say a word and "you're probably just as confused as I am" about Tommy Pham and the benches clearing. “I don’t even know him. No idea. Barely know who he is. It was weird, man. It was weird. It was unprovoked and super weird."

PHAM COMMENTS: (bleep) about a ball not being called a strike to the umpire when it’s clearly below the zone and away is disrespectful not only to the umpire but the hitter as well so like I said when I flipped the bat [fork] him @KeeganMatheson dude has two years in the show I know the zone

Tommy had a real rough upbringing. But his problem is that he makes it everyone else's problem.

I don't know if he knows that or not. He doesn't seem to be particularly self-aware.

Ummm... he's ALWAYS been this guy. Totally unhinged and an asssshole... product of his upbringing.

Talented enough to have a long career.
Too big of a jackwagon for anyone to keep him around for any time whatsoever - he's a cancer.

He's a super tightly wound individual... probably helped him be a 20 WAR player over his career, while also probably hurting him in a lot of other ways.

He's been the guy for a decade now teams bring in to bring intensity to a clubhouse that lacks it. But he always overstays his welcome and teams can't wait to show him the door.

I hope he stays around the game after his playing career. Maybe some of the edge will come off. He's always had a unique way of speaking in interviews, he'd be great as a commentator.

NO! Nobody would want to work with him.
He could not complete a sentence without an expletive.

Kimbrel has been with 9 teams in 11 years. Is he a cancer?
Chris Stratton has been with 7 teams in 8 years. Cancer?

Like the ones above, Tommy's career of late has been 1 year deals, then traded to teams in the playoff hunt who want him.

For cancers, see Puig. He hasn't been in the league in 6 years.

Organizations keep signing Pham. And no, it's not because they know less about his personality than you...

1 year deals and playoff contending teams that use him for a quick playoff push then dispose of him

In other words teams that use him to strengthen their farm sent to teams that don’t appear to want to keep him around for very long.

I can agree he’s not on a Yasiel Puig level of cancer, but clearly his reputation hasn’t outweighed his rather high talent level. Hence why he’s never found a “forever home”

'Dispose' is an inaccurate word. The Cards didn't 'dispose of' Mark DeRosa, nor Quintana.

You don't need to make this choice, you know?
1 - relievers move all the time
2 - Kimbrel was on 4 teams in 12 seasons. You don't need to pretend you don't know what's happened over the last 3.
Like the ones above, Tommy's career of late has been 1 year deals, then traded to teams in the playoff hunt who want him.
Oh, is that what has happened with Kimbrel?

No, it's not. He's been released by 5 different organizations since 2023. Those aren't trades.
For cancers, see Puig. He hasn't been in the league in 6 years.
Cause he was involved in a sports betting investigation & lied to federal agents. If that wasn't enough, he got hurt and isn't good enough anymore.

But sure, compare him to Pham if you want... if you have to go to the lowest common denominator to convince yourself that Pham is an upstanding guy, have at it. Goofy AF, though.

They keep signing him because he's good enough to play in the league. They keep letting him move on for... well... the stuff you want to pretend isn't true.

This year was the first year in 4 years that he didn't get traded at the deadline. If he has stopped being a good enough hitter to net a prospect at the deadline then he may be playing his last season.

He's had a good career... earned $40M for 20 WAR of production... I was stunned to look back at his last full year with the Cards and realize he was a 6 WAR player that year... 11th in MVP voting.... monster season (.931 OPS) in 128 games.

He arguably hasn't been good enough to warrant himself being a good deadline acquisition in quite some time, as his 2023 1st half with the Mets was the only stop during that 4 year stretch where he had a OPS+ above 103. A .243/.323/.385 overall line since the start of 2020, and 4.6 total bWar.
