ok i have a question -- if they don't put either koperniak or church on the 40 man this year do they have to protect them this off season? if not why not go ahead and waive hampson and siani and put both of them on it so they can promote them to play the rest of this season?

Koperniak is on the 40 man roster this year, he just was never called up because he had a miserable year

Church does need to be added this offseason to be protected. so does crooks, bernal, prieto, blaze jordan, joshua baez, pitcher max rojcic. There are others too but the list is way too long and i think those are all the semirelevant players.

If a player isnt protected, another team has to claim them on their mlb roster the whole year orngive them back. If we add a player to the 40 man but then waive them off the 40 man cuz we need room, then another team only has to claim the player to their 40 man and not to their mlb team. So teams sometimes try.to sneak keeping a few borderline guys off the 40 man cuz they may not be rule 5 drafted but wluld definitely be claimed off waivers to 40 man if added then dropped.


Anyway, to answer earlier question, there is playing time to consider too as you dont want a guy to come up and just sit on the bench vs actually play in memphis. My guess is church does come up in september. I also want to add they might not necessarily waive siani this offseason as they like his defense if scott were to get injured and siani does still have 1 option year remaining next year and they can stash him in memphis. Hampton will definitely be gone so i think they have no qualms about dfaing him if they needed to. Actually are 40 man roster isnt even full right now. I think we only have 37 after the trades.
