I certainly do. If you touched it, it was an error. They are way to lenient today, but the whole game has changed. I remember when there were no playoffs, just the AL champ vs the NL champ. Of course there were a lot less teams then, and the WS was in September. They use to put TVS in school for the WS.

There is no integrity in the official scoring at all.

Whatever direction the home team wants it to be is how they score it. You need a pitcher you are promoting to not give up earned runs score it an error. You want a shortstop to win a gold glove because your team has nothing else going it's a hit.

Winn is a fantastic defensive player without question. If he isn't the favorite for the GG he is certainly a finalist.

That was 100% an error last night.

Don't and never have agreed with the saying. Most on this board couldn't field a dribbler much less a rocket. Balls take bad hops also. As LaRussa used to say, "They're men not machines." The mental errors are the worst to me. Even Ozzie missed one every once in a while.

Official scoring is a joke

I booed at last nights game when they failed to give Winn an obvious error on that play.

It’s an okay rule of thumb for people who aren’t good with nuance, but it’s wrong. Say an outfielder gets an incredible jump on a shallow bloop. He sprints in faster than most other fielders in the game, dives for the ball and it goes in and out of his glove as he dives. You want to give him an error because he made the play close?

No. And they wouldn’t. At ieast not today.

But you’re well aware of the saying. Do you think it factored more into scoring yesterday or in today’s game.

STL is trying very, very hard to have Winn set or tie the record for fewest errors - and win the Gold Glove.
All about the marketing.
Never about the game.
Toxic culture.

Years ago, Jack Herman did an excellent job scoring and there was another from the East Side Journal who also was a scorer. Both were tough with a great sense of judgment. They also would go back and change a hit to an error a error to a hit in later innings.

Of course there are exceptions

If it’s anywhere near a “routine” play, sure, it’s a good rule of thumb. If it’s a play where extraordinary effort is required just to get anywhere near making the play, then I can see backing off that.

For me as to Gold Glove consideration for a middle infielder , the number of errors is one factor, the range getting to balls that others can’t get to is another, third is the arm strength of the fielder.
If two players with excellent range can get to same ball, does one guy’s great arm nail the runner at first while the other player’s throw does not beat the runner.
Just catching the routine ground balls without errors does not constitute a Gold Glove award in my book.

I don't think that rule should be applied universally. What if you have elite-level speed that 90% of the league doesn't possess and your diving abilities are in the same class? You could get to but perhaps not be able to complete a play on balls that no one else might even attempt.

Shouldn't be punished for that.

Official scorers typically consider the catch, not the effort required to get in position to make the catch… even though it doesn’t meld perfectly with “reasonable effort”.

You don’t often see errors given to outfielders making diving plays.
