Gray grew up near Nashville area playing sports in hot weather. Went to college there too. My guess is that Gray keeps it up. Futuregm pointed out his history of awful Julys. Age and heat don't mix well. You make a good point about the grip in hot weather. It's not the misconception of Gray being able to handle the heat, it's his inability to get a good grip on his pitches when it's super hot.
Everyone's body reacts differently to the climate, in Gray's case he just can't get the right grip when it's super hot.
