Donavan defense overrated

I like Brendan Donovan and his grit but I think he is just a decent 2nd basemen but not a great one. I have seen 2 throws to home in the last couple of months trying to catch a runner scoring from 3rd but failing when he should have went for the sure outs. I have watched him flub routine ground balls this year.
I still think he is a decent 2b but far from a really good defensive 2 basemen like many people think.

I don't recall anyone trying to make him out to be a GG caliber 2B.

Listening nightly to Carey and Thompson I think I must be watching a gold glover

There it is. Chip will also make you think a 312' fly ball to the gap has a chance of leaving the yard.

Welp.....he actually did win the utility GG in 2022, with 2B position being his most games played at.

Just because he can play multiple positions does not earn One a utility GG, the 2022 award was a gift
He has limited range and a rag arm

The guy sux so bad it's crazy how some on this forum think the Cardinals could acquire a decent starting pitcher for him.....

Actually it does if you can play multiple positions decently you can win a utility gold glove. But yes if they just make him a second baseman zero chance he wins a gold glove

You beat me to it!
I think he plays average/above average defense at multiple positions.
That justifies the award.
But no....he would not win a GG at any one position.
His flexibility in that regard creates his defensive value.

As a utility player. A new, made up GG
Any position he's played more than 50 games at, he's a - total DRS
19th as a 2b in outs above average. Across his years in the league at 2b, 28th

Donovan is a really good player -- if he were the 5th-7th best offensive player on the team and being used as a swiss army knife kind of player he would be awesome. He is a glue guy that every team needs but is not a difference maker, his defensive value is he can play multiple positions better than average not that he plays any one position at an elite level. This team needs so much help.

He inherited that from his Grandpa Harry. I was at Busch II as a teen with my transistor radio in the LF Bleachers, and Harry yells, “IT MIGHT BE, IT COULD BE…oh and Matty Alou makes a fine catch in center!” Hell, it didn’t reach the warning track.
That was when I realized my Mom was correct — she called Harry “Old Blabbermouth”. She, as I later, preferred Jack Buck.

Donnie, like so many on this roster, is an acceptable complimentary piece. When in a lineup with a couple stars/thumpers works just fine. When relied upon to provide the catalyst for the offense, or the defense, he/they will fall short. The Cards just don’t have any stars to drive this team.
