Is next move for Arenado the 60 day IL ? Think so

On Aug. 1st , Arenado was placed on the 10 day IL . At the conclusion of that , I look for Nado to be placed on the 60 day IL .
When moving him to the 60 day IL , the start date can be retroactive to the first date he was placed on the 10 day IL (in this case Aug.1st ) That 60 day period would run thru the remainder of the season which ends on Sept. 28th .
The advantage of placing a player on the 60 man IL is that he would be removed from the 40 man roster . The Cardinals could then take one of their minor leaguers NOT on the 40 man and move him to that list. That is important to the Cardinals as they have a few guys coming up for the Rule 5 draft that currently are not on the 40 man list.
Unless I am missing something regarding other details in the rules, it seems to me a good move by the FO and it effectively ends Nado 2025 season this year.

A reasonable theory. But why wouldn't they have just put him on the 60 to begin with?

It would be permanent to put him on the 60 . Unsure if this could be a reason but by going the 10 day first , it does give the team the option of keeping him available should Gorman, Saggesse etc go down with a significant injury these first 10 days . Then they can move him on to the 60 day then . This way they have until Aug. 11th to make the final decision so it gives them an extra 10 day window. Just a a guess !

I want to see Arenado back this season. If he doesn't return there is zero chance that he gets traded. If he comes back and has a great September then there is a chance that a team will trade for him.

I think the Insurance Company's Dr's might look unfavorably upon attempts at Insurance Fraud. Just a thought.

Do cardinals actually have some type of insurance and then why would they file a claim on it to push the issue? What insurance covers only a two month injury? likely none. I dont think the insurance policies some teams had on ball players are near like it was years ago.

I have no beef with Nado, none at all. That would make me dislike him 100%. Take the rest of the season off??? I can't fathom that from a player.

I could see him needing some minor procedure for the shoulder. And I could see the Cardinals trumpeting a "new and improved " Arenado being back to his old self for 2026.

That is not how it works though. At the end of the season all players come off the IL (including the 60 day). They have to be returned back to the 40 man roster at that time or be waived. So if Nado is put on the 60 day IL he will go back on the 40 man at the conclusion of the season before the Rule 5 draft.

Yes you are missing one fact. Once the season ends there is no 60 day IL. So once the season ends Arenado would count towards the 40 man again. So that can't be used to protect a minor leaguer from the Rule 5.

I could absolutely be wrong, but I believe the 10-day IL is the minimum, not maximum.
Arenado could be on the 10-day for a 2 weeks, a month or more and still go to 60-day.
It’s happened in the past to other players, especially pitchers, who just don’t respond to treatment.
