I appreciate your opinions about TV and movies and I'll typically try and put something on a list if you rec it.
I just can't with this one. It all started to go downhill for me after the Lithgow season, which was one of the best seasons of TV ever. By the end it was just nonsensical. Then they did more. And more, and then some more, and now this.
So many shows take this path. Probably for another thread. I'll just mention Billions and Homeland as two perfect examples. Hope you enjoy.
No question that the original series went completely off the rails by the time it ended its 8 season run, but I think the decline was gradual. Fully agree that it peaked with the Trinity arc in S4, but I don't think S5 was completely horrible, just a noticeable drop in quality from the previous season. But then each successive season got worse and it was a total [censored] by the end. The first attempt at a followup (
New Blood) started off somewhat promising, but just didn't really pan out by the end of the limited series. The prequel series (
Original Sin) was actually decent, but nowhere near as good as the first four seasons of the original series, though I will say that Patrick Gibson, the actor they have playing twentysomething Dexter, is uncanny in his ability to mimic Michael C. Hall's mannerisms portraying Dexter.
All that said,
Resurrection has actually been surprisingly much better than it deserves to be. The setting of New York City and the big name stars they've brought on have been excellent choices, and the series is getting pretty terrific reviews so far (currently 94% critic rating on RT). Unlike
New Blood, this is not intended to be a one-off limited series, and the showrunners are hoping to squeeze 3-4 season out of this. I think they're off to a pretty good start, but of course it could all go sideways down the road. But as of right now, I'm still enjoying it.
Agree completely on the decline of
Homeland and
Billions. Seems to be a Showtime thing with shows that should be 3-5 seasons getting dragged out to 7-8 seasons. I do think
Shameless held up pretty well until the departure of Emmy Rossum after S9.
