As some people said early in the year, Contreras will be ok.
It’s now July 28th and his OPS is up to .807. He is one of two players with an OPS above .800 on the team now, with Herrera being the other at .883.
When it comes down to it, Contreras can hit. And he’s proven fine defensively at 1B.
2023: .264/.358/.467 131 OPS+
2024 :.262/.380/.468 137 OPS+
2025: .264/.352/.455 126 OPS+
And he leads the league in doubles with 28.
Since April 18th, Contreras is hitting .295/.388/.512, good for a .900 OPS.

Contreras has played outfield before, and he actually was originally a 3b in the minor leagues that cubs converted to catcher cuz he had a cannon- so 1b is probably pretty natural as a forner 3b. He also even played a coupke 2b games in the minors and had above avg speed more his career so he was an athlete and not your typical slow catcher

Year to year consistency, and has adapted to 1B very well. Good player to have, and as he gets more comfortable with the 1B transition, wouldn't be surprised to see his offense tick up a little higher.

He is just a streaky hitter. He had a horrible few middle months his first season here but then rebounded to rake down the stretch.
I always thought there was no reason to worry if he could play 1b. He played it several games in the majors and actually used to be a 3b in the minors

He's one of two actually dangerous RH hitters in the lineup, and he'll be one of the only big salaries on the team next year. He's one of the last players they should want to trade, and they should only do it if they get a TOR pitcher.

That's great, but he's not the bona fide power hitter that's desperately needed on this team. Got to have more home runs.

Interesting that there may be even more positional flexibility in Contreras. I had not heard the 3B connection before.
But it has me wondering on how and where Herrera transitions to, positionally. He cannot just be a DH. Is time at 3B an option in addition to OF/1B?
Back to original topic. WC has been great. A bit dramatic but the rest of the team lacks life. WC is right there with Donovan as 2025 MVP of this team.

Smart move would be to trade him at deadline; he could bring back legit prospects.
He won't age well in his later years either.

He was never - and wasn't intended to be - a true power hitter. That was Arenado and Goldy - both of whom fell down after the MVP season in 2022.
He's 6th in slugging % among MLB first basemen with over 400 ABs. Not too shabby.
He's 3rd in Outs Above Average for 1st basemen and 13th in DRS - 2 away from 8th.

he just started cold - had nothing to do with his spot in the lineup
