There depth at Memphis is really bad. I am not certain they would want to put Mathews and Roby in the rotation and risk them getting pummelled game after game which could hurt them next year. They have a guy Curtis Taylor who is pitching OK is not a prospect who could start games. I suppose they could have Graceffo start some games along with McGreevy and they could get through with that. It would be a really ugly end to the season, albeit, it is quickly heading that way anyway. But, if they could get Gray, Mikolas and Arenado to waive the NTC for the right deal, lets get on with it.

Of course they would survive. Will probably play better with the pressure off... Pitching can hardly suck more than it does now....

OR team could get creative and play half the remaining home games at Memphis. Then those Memphis pitchers could be watched by family, friends, and other Memphis Redbird fans and probably pack the stadium to sellout crowds !

Sure they would survive but most of this isn’t happening. Gray has said he doesn’t want to leave and unless he has a change of heart his NTC will keep him here. Mikolas and Fedde offer almost nothing but health. Showing up every fifth day is something but they struggle getting people out. Like Gray, Mikolas has a NTC and unless he has a change of heart he also said he doesn’t want to be traded.

That leaves Helsley and Maton. Maton would get you something as a late inning pitcher but not a lot. The thing with him is he doesn’t make a lot so that’s also attractive. Matz may have some interest but his return won’t be great. It’s his walk year and he’s still owed 4-5 million. Maybe the return will be a little more if the Cardinals want to eat some money but we shouldn’t expect more than a lottery ticket.

Helsley is the one with some value but he’s a FA after the season which will bring his value down. There is no control. The Cardinals have to already know if they want him back. He says he wants to stay. If the Cardinals are going to keep him, sign him. If they have decided they are not going to sign him, they have to trade him or risk losing him for nothing. That would be a mistake to just let him walk. If you don’t plan on signing him you have to get some value for him.

Well, if they aren't going to do something then they might as well go on and get it over with. What reason is there to watch this garbage. Pretty soon it'll be last place.

This is like having a large bandaid on. You can try to pry it off slowly and extend the amount of time it hurts. Or you can rip it off increasing the pain but reducing the time it hurts.

STL can either straddle the road and reduce the pain keeping players so this year only sucks a little bit but next year and the year after also suck. With no end in sight to the suckage.

Or, they can go all in on a rebuild and totally suck the rest of this year with potential to end the suckage by 2027 with an exciting new roster and hope.

Me I'm a rip the bandaid off guy. Let this year totally suck. Pump that farm full of potential and reduce the salary on the books. Invest in development and scouting. Truly make this a year of trial by fire for the kids and next year start signing smarter FAs to the roster.

So prepare to deal anyone on the roster not expected to be part of the 2028 roster going forward. That includes Donovan, Nado, Helsley, Maton, etc.

What's your definition of surviving the season? Based on that, are they on pace to "survive" with the current roster?

They have nothing of excitement that people want to come see. The only draw would be for fans who like to see mound meetings, and pitching changes. Plenty of that for those fans.

It’s a season of wither to begin with. If we were in last place, then your question would be answered post haste.

But if you ask if they trade the above and can they compete. No I doubt it.

You should get something for Maton, Matz, Helsley. Gray if he waves. The rest are not worth struggling to replace.

There was talk 3 weeks ago of winning the division. Now they are 9 and 8 games behind the Cubs and Brewers respectively on the loss side.

So the Cardinals are not surviving very well right now. I guess you could say they're still in the Wild Card race. But with the way they are playing...

The 4-game series with the Padres could be the determining factor for what happens at the trade deadline. But even with some success there, I doubt Mozeliak is going to do anything significant at the deadline anyway to bolster the team. BDW does not want to increase payroll.
