Cardinals lefty Steven Matz has drawn some trade interest as the July 31 deadline inches closer, reports Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch (video link, bullpen talk beginning around the 4:10 mark).

“There are a handful of teams at least poking around on Matz,” per Goold.

He adds that the Cardinals will also likely be open to offers on righty Phil Maton but would need a very strong offer to trade closer Ryan Helsley, who could receive a qualifying offer if he’s not moved.

Please trade him. What a disastrous contract they gave him. Anything we can get for him, even a lottery ticket, is worth it.

He gave up a two-run homerun in 3 out 4 appearances a few weeks back.

That will earn a Yepez like return, which is fine with me as well.

I would be SHOCKED if Bloom gave Helsley a qualifying offer. Mozeliak would do that.

He is never gonna get a $20+M QO. He isn't worth that, a rare even for a closer to get $20+M/season. Has anyone ever?

At the $21.05 million QO he'd get this year, he'd be the highest paid reliever in history (Diaz $20.4 and Hader $19M).
It. Won't. Happen.

BDWJr would choke if asked to make a QO to Helsley, agreed never happening.

saw that earlier on MLBTR.

Goold is a shill for the Cards. It won’t happen. (If it does they are far dumber than I imagined.)

He reported what he's heard/been told. How does that make him a "shill"?

Maton has more value with Cards if they keep winning than anything they’ll receive back in a trade…..do we need more middling AA roster fill?

Agreed, keep Maton and trade Helsley for the better return. Cards likely won’t notice the difference this year

I meant Maton +
pair him with another/others

That’s a good idea especially if you paired maton with helsley I think a contender would give up a good prospect or two for two late inning relievers

I've been reading him for 15 years or so and he's aligned with the front office position far more than a beat writer should be. IMHO
Here's a picture I got of him not long ago.
