Edgar Renteria Trade

The St. Louis Cardinals traded Braden Looper, along with Armando Almanza and Pablo Ozuna, to the Florida Marlins for Edgar Renteria. That's ALL we gave up for Renteria? Didn't realize what a heist this turned out to be

That sure qualified as a "rebuilding" type of trade didn't it. Acquiring a 22 year old SS. Jocketty was able to turn the team young with Renteria, Tatis, and Drew.

Yes in the end it looks like a steal. At the time Ozuna was the #8 prospect in baseball, Looper was a 3rd overall pick in 1996 and was a top 25 prospect in baseball, and Almanza was coming off a season with a 3.16 ERA in 59 appearances in AA and AAA and 91 K’s in 68 IP.
In other words it would be like dealing Wetherholt, Liam Doyle (when we can deal him), and Andre Granillo for a Jackson Holliday type of deal?

Speaking of Looper I came across this gem reading about Doyle:
The organization’s most recent pitcher selected in the top five was Braden Looper, who went third overall in ’96.

^this
It was a very risky move by WJ that panned out nicely. MO never seems to be on the right side of these types of gambles.

Jocketty was very good at selling high on prospects instead of letting their value crater then dealing them. He got an 18-7 all star season out of Kent Bottenfield knew that wasnt going to happen again and traded him for Edmonds Mo would have never done that

Renteria was entering his first year of arbitration… so someone more like Rooker (if he hadn’t been extended) might be closer.

Ha. That's exactly what prompted me to go back and see who was in that trade...I read it, as well

I was trying to comp the positions and ages, too, though. Renteria was entering his age 22 season and was coming off his first AS season. There really isn’t a pure comp for it because I also think that the minor leaguers/prospects are far more valuable nowadays than they were back then. Yairo Padilla or Rainiel Rodriguez may be a better comp for Ozuna than Wetherholt.

Easily one of his best trades.

In that case, maybe Jeremy Peña this past offseason would be better. He’s also close to the same spot in SS hierarchy.

Crazy isn't it?
29 years since the Cardinals have drafted a Top 5 pitcher.

Well it’s been 27 years since we drafted top 5 anything.

A good crazy indeed.
Amazing how successful they've been given no Top 5 pitchers (or hitters sans JD Drew) drafted since 1979.
