The Pujols moon shot
Good morning.
Dead space on the board- All Star creep.
If I’m correct that has been 20 years now. Oct 17 2005.
Where were you?
Why do I bring this up. First NASA is still tracking that ball. Second, and the most likely important fact is, Houston doesn’t clinch at home.
We lost the series, but that win won the series for me.
I had to watch the video several times, as Lidges reaction is legendary. Killed it.
Just a thought in time.

"OMG"
The thing I remember is 41,000 screaming and hollering stros' fans going completely silent, you could've heard a pin drop in that stadium when Albert hit that rocket.

I had just moved from Houston to San Antonio that year. I had been transferred down to Houston in 1994 and went to quite a few games at the Astrodome and then Enron Field (now Minute Maid Park). When I first moved to Houston, I could root for the Astros because they were still in the NL West and not a Cards rival. After the 1995 strike and the Astros came to the NL Central, well, I jumped off the Astros bandwagon.
So, I was watching that game and the thing that I recall is what a great job Thom Brennaman of Fox did describing the play. His words were something like, “STUNNED IN DISBELIEF THIS CROWD…” I still replay that broadcast from YouTube a lot!
Brennaman also did a great job calling the 2004 NLCS between those two teams, especially the Edmonds extra inning walkoff in Game 6 and the Edmonds spectacular catch in Game 7 which I still maintain saved that game for us!

I remember all of that. Albert gonna be Albert. I just remember his whole career with the Cards, you always stopped and watched his at bats if you could. You always knew the guy would come through. I am 68 and I hope I get to see one more Cardinal hitter of that class. There was Stan, then Albert in my lifetime. Hoping for one more. He was the once in a generation hitter for the Cards. We've had great hitters like Ted Simmons, or the incredible Torre season, but sustained top 10 or so of all time MLB hitter performance? I have only seen two....sp25 wrote: ↑15 Jul 2025 09:23 amAnd the pictures of Astros executive Nolan Ryan. He was not a happy man.sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑15 Jul 2025 09:16 amI noticed that. I remember a joke circulating at that time that on the Astros flight to StL after the game one of the players said to Lidge that he just saw that ball outside the plane window and it was still rising! ..or something like that.

I watched it several times awhile ago. Yea great call. Like an Eminence Front, People forget. Eikstien singled, Edmonds walked. That set up the hit.Hazelwood72 wrote: ↑15 Jul 2025 09:26 amHi Doggie!sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑15 Jul 2025 09:10 am Good morning.

Re: The Pujols moon shot
David Eckstein gets credit for that inning….
fought off several pitches to get on base and keep the game alive

They really should have pulled lidge after that walk
After retiring two guys. All those pitches to ekstein, and then the walk …he was done
Huge mistake by the stros

Strange food for fodder. One could argue that the huge let down of emotions, followed by a flight to STL then back to Houston, an extra playoff game, all had a small cumulative affect on their WS sweep.45s wrote: ↑15 Jul 2025 09:59 amThey really should have pulled lidge after that walk

Just a little.

Just a little.
And oswalt carved them up the next game
My thought is just that the Sox were much better
Sox won their division, 36 games over
Stros were a wild card
The one game they had a chance to win was lost on a home run by Jeff Blum
He is now the Stros analyst on t v

I hear ya. I just didn’t think “ that” Astros team would get swept. And I don’t recall it even close?45s wrote: ↑15 Jul 2025 10:14 amThey say that momentum is only as good as the next days starting pitchersikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑15 Jul 2025 10:04 amStrange food for fodder. I've never seen that in all the games I've watched (baseball, hockey, football, ect...) ever.sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑15 Jul 2025 09:16 amI noticed that. I mean silent. No clinch at home.rockondlouie wrote: ↑15 Jul 2025 09:14 am A. Petitte in the dugout mouthing:

One man (Albert) silencing an entire stadium that was going insane just moments earlier.
Loved it!

I don't think anyone has mentioned it yet, but one enduring memory is former President George H W Bush in the background jerking his head around in disbelief.
