Don't overreact to who the Cards draft today

This draft is weak compared to the past two drafts. I'd say Anderson is close to a high floor/high ceiling "can't miss" type but tons of questions after.
Doyle has a high floor but that's a high-end reliever which would be a disappointment for a top 10 pick.
Arnold is a question mark to me because his fastball got hit around this season. He could end up the top player in the draft if his FB can play up better. He has a high floor though because he has a good shot to be at worst a back end starter.
Witherspoon and Bremner deserve top 10 picks too. Witherspoon is a power pitcher with a full arsenal. His pitches need to tick up a bit to be a top end starter. I really think the Rockies should target him because all his pitches have tight spin and that may play up better in Coors.
Bremner started slow but had 10 or more K's, 6+innings, and 3 ir less ER in 6 of his last 7 starts. His dumb college team held him out of their elimination game and went with the normal slot in the rotation. Had he gotten that start and kept up his recent dominance then I think he'd be a slam dunk top 10 and maybe top 5 if a team is looking for a RHP over the lefties. Bremner has the best FB/Changeup combo in the draft but his slider was inconsistent to start the year. Once he locked it in he was dominant. Uc Santa Barbara is not a high end college for developing pitchers too so I think there is a ton of untapped potential with Bremner. Would not be upset if the Cardinals take him at 5.
Aiva Arquette imo is hugely overrated due to him coming from the same school as Bazzana. He would have struggled to be a top 15 pick in last years draft. I don't even think he's the best SS prospect in the draft. He probably isn't even a SS much longer. Goes to show how terrible the college bats are in this draft. I think a guy like Wehiwa Aloy has a better shot at sticking at SS with more power but not as much hit. Alex Lodise has a better chance at sticking and his bat looked just as good this year too. NO college bats are worthy of a top ten pick this year.
I think among preps, Jojo Parker is probably the most high ceiling/high floor. I'm actually surprised he's not the #1 prep player in mocks. Holliday has the power but Parker is lightyears ahead with the hit tool and has shown good power as well. Holliday could not make it if his hit tool doesn't improve, especially his ability to catch up to velocity.
Willits is a huge question mark even though his tools are very enticing. He lacks physicality and the question is does he not have it there or is it a lack of physical maturity with him being so young.

lol true. I'm just trying to drive home the lack of consensus with this draft. Too many question marks.

I'm really focused on what comes after the 1st round. We have the chance to make quite an impact. Not the Mariners type of impact with their 20million in bonus pool, but we can make quite a driving impact for the future. If a guy like Petry is still available @55, I'll forego my wish for a hyper talented HS player who's hard to sign.

Had Petry as my Nick Kurtz(big bat little D value) coming into this year. I wonder if his shoulder was bothering him before his official injury. Thought he was going to dominate this year.

I agree.
And clearly you have read my posts in the "draft vs deadline" thread.
Folks do need to be careful and realistic.
A #5 pick is just that and nothing more
It is a pick.
Nothing more than an educated guess.
Zero guarantees
Someone picked in round 3 or 5 could end up being the best player in the draft.

Given the complete ineptitude of Cards brass to draft, cultivate, and sustain an All-star at the ML level I’m not even sure why this is a topic of conversation??

g'mornin all.
it' the day of.
woopee
Duce, I also am not that enamored with Arnold.
I watched a regional game and he was, shall we say, less than dominant.
I wasn't that impressed.
Then , this morning I watched video of EEEESHAWN's 6 strike outs last night.
Arnold and Ixan look SO SIMILAR IN STYLE.
Arnold probably has the higher ceiling but, man, those two look alike (pitching style) (IMO)
re Willits, yes, he is slight of build.
but he has plenty of time to fill out and get stronger. he's only 17.
neither blows me away, but they say we will probably draft one of them.

Thanks for netting some of it out. I won't overreact in any way. Never really do. LOL
IMO when a team is in the condition STL is (rebuild despite denials) and at least 2 years away from contending again the goal of an early pick like #5 is to shoot for a high ceiling. Either an every day player or ace pitcher. I would rather strike out than hit a single with that pick.
For a position player I would prioritize a contact hitter with athleticism to play different spots. AKA like the SSs in todays draft. Power is so hard to predict.
If a pitcher I think the choice would be a college guy who dominated with more than just a fastball and had excellent mechanics and control. A guy with at least 3 pitches he can throw for strikes.
Who meets that criteria I don't know. I am just a sideline fan hoping we get a good one.
