watching him now...he can block the plate rather well, pretty athletic for a catcher...but not fast. Probably need's a former pro to mentor him on framing and such. He's out of the crouch/off the knee rather quickly, imo

here's your problem: Do you want the catcher or the hitter? If you want the catcher, then it'll take a while. Bernal and Herrera have been stateside for a while. Crooks is being promoted one level a year. System catcher's usually take a while.
If you want the hitter, and you want to put an express sticker on it....well, then you move him to another position and let him fly

That's a pretty good summary. There are always differing opinions, but I am most interested in the bat.

good point. was just thinking as a catcher, he's gonna be prolly 4-5yrs out. and then there's that gotcha of having a couple of good prospects on the cusp

I’ll take the hitter for 2 reasons. We have very few power bats like this so get him here as soon as possible as long as he’s ready with the bat. Second, sounds like Bernal is likely long term solution at catcher.

he has the XBH power to his swing...but enough contact is always the issue. So many DSL players end up like this. Sometimes one or two will take 7 or 8 years and it clicks, but then the prospect status has washed well off...IE: Ramon Mendoza at Springfield. You sign 10-20 of these kids a year at the ages of 16-17yo...and you pray that 1 or 2 out of every 3 years of signing sticks....1 or 2 out of 30-60.
Rarely, it seems, you get a player who has it all click in 2-4 seasons.
Those are his chances. Same with Pino, Cordoba and Suarez and Encarnacion.... contact is always the issue...everything else is shiny and bright...
Pena.... I wish it all clicks for him later this season, into to next...I wish. I'm not confident based off the norm

the 25-40% K rates aren't pretty either.

no, they are not
what I wouldn't give to see STL field a fast, high contact, gap hitting team again
