Shut the Cards out 3 games in a row and then gets shut out 2 games in a row by Seattle. The highs and lows I guess. They aren't 15.5 games out for nothing. Amazing that baseball can change from day to day like no other game.

Baseball is not like any other game, that's for certain - for many reasons but one major thing - it is the only game where the defense is in control of the ball. HUGE difference.
Not surprising. The Pirates rode a 6 game home hot streak, and now they are back down to earth. They simply are not that good. Especially offensively.

The late, great baseball writer Roger Angell wrote that the terms offense and defense are backwards in baseball. Only the pitcher and catcher know what’s coming next. The pitcher can make the ball do all kinds of swoops and dives. The batter, glumly, digs in, not exactly knowing what’s coming and has to reflexively react, much like a hockey goalie.

I always thought Angell’s take was spot on.

BTW, if you enjoy great baseball writing, get a few of his books.

It still amazes me how contagious both bad and good hitting are.

Baseball, and its length of season certainly is like no other. The best teams the the league typically lose 40% of their games, while the bad teams lose 60%.

Seconded. A lot of his work is available online too. Here's an essay of his to warm you up, plus a picture.

The game belongs to Bob Gibson.
