Cards Cubs Finale

Biggest game of the season tomorrow. Big difference being 4.5 back v. 6.5. Then we finish going into the break with 3 against the Nats and the Braves. The Braves have been bewilderingly bad this year. But, they still scare me like the Pirates series didn't feel good this week.

In this big game, we have Fedde pitching. Anyone confident in the outcome of tomorrow's game? Right now, the bats seem to be more alive when Gray, Pallante and Liberatore are pitching. You can almost feel the players are more confident with that trio. Same when McGreevy is pitching.

The Brewers play the Dodgers 3 and the Nats 3.

The Cubs play the Twins and the Yanks. The Yanks have not been good recently. Hopefully they right that ship against the Cubs.

Its a big game tomorrow due to a win tomorrow plus the opportunity to win 4 or 5 of 6 of the next 6 could put the Cards in a good spot going into the break. Then immediately after the break, the Cards get AZ, CO, SD and Miami. They should have a lot of clarity by the trade deadline. They will have went through the easiest part of their schedule and played the Padres heads up. If they are out of a playoff spot at that point, they should probably sell as the schedule gets harder. If they can play well, they could find themselves a couple games up in a wild card position or even in first place. But, losing tomorrow makes first place highly unlikely.

For me , the more telling games prior to the trade deadline may be the FOUR San Diego games at Busch July 24-27 .

Currently , we are in a vertual 3-way tie ( percentage points difference) with Padres and Giants for the 3rd wildcard spot.
Padres 47-41
Giants 48-42
Cards 48-42

If Cardinals can win that home series vs. Padres that would be quite meaningful to drop Padres back a bit and be in contention for playoffs.
A 4-game sweep by Padres would be quite devastating dropping the Cardinals several games back of the final wildcard spot.

Note: Immediately after the July 31st trade deadline day , the Cardinals play 3 vs Padres on the West Coast followed by 3 with Dodgers.

So I think the 4-game Padres series at Busch with the final game just 4 days prior to the deadline as quite crucial for Cards.

I agree and did mention that at the end of my post. The Cards schedule gets tougher in August when 12 of the first 15 games are against the Padres, Dodgers, Cubs and Yankees. If they are not positioned well at July 31, it is hard to be confident they are going to run that gauntlet and survive. I was focused on tomorrow's game because of the two game swing factor with the opportunity to carry that momentum into two winnable series that they must win if not take 5/6. It they can do that, lets see what happens.

It would be really nice if MO could do something with the pitching by all star break...

Im going to predict Mo will make a piddly deal for an average (at best) reliever. Its the non-commital, easy move. Don't look for him to be aggressive by any means.

Good thoughts.
If Fedde bombs again on the heels of Mikolas imploding I’m not sure they could replace both in the rotation prior to the deadline??
Personally I’d move MM to the BP and replace him with McGreevy.
Regardless...McGreevy figures to get a look after the deadline. Especially if someone is dealt.
If Miles does continue to start:
Next- Thursday home vs Nats
Then- A/S Break and you can realign rotation so he pitches at Rockies.
After that home vs Padres.
He at least seems to pitch better at home.
Fingers crossed....wait and see!

No, the Cardinals are not going to be major buyers at the deadline. This season is not, and never has been, about competing this year. Any major moves will be selling, Helsley in particular. Unless Gray, Arenado, or Contreras agree to waive their NTC’s, he’s the only piece that would bring much of a return. If Fedde rights the ship, he’d bring a nice prospect, but not a top tier one. Matz the same.

Now, one move, similar to 2022 COULD be made. The Cardinals are once again faced with a glut of outfielders/1B/DH types. Just like the surprise trade of Bader for Montgomery, I would not be surprised to see a Nootbaar, Burleson, Gorman or Donovan traded for a pitcher with term.

Despite what many of you believe, Mo will not be the decision maker. He is in charge of the day to day operations of the team and the handling of details. The decisions, especially those with long term implications, will be made by Bloom and DeWitt. Mo will have an input, but the decisions are out of his hands. If DeWitt doesn’t side with Bloom, what’s the point in Bloom hanging around next year knowing DeWitt’s lack of confidence.

If this were such a big series why did the Cardinals pitch Mikolas and Fedde in it when they could have set it up to pitch Gray in it? I would have trusted McGreevy to pitch more than Fedde despite McGreevy's performance in St. Louis against the Cubs.

I guess at that level they rarely mess with a pitchers schedule. It does happen. And doesn’t mean it wasn’t thought of. Maybe timing.

Not much hope if Fedde is pitching. I'm sure the Cubs are afraid. Hopefully Cards can out slug them.

In his interview w/the Cat yesterday Mo didn't exactly state it this way but did in fact immediately bring up getting I. Hererra back when Cat asked him about adding players.

Pitiful but typical Mo

You are exactly right, bccardsfan. Granted, getting Herrera back will help. But it will also diminish pt for Gorman. Just as he is showing life.

IMO it doesn’t have to mean less PT for Gorman. No reason Nootbar has to play every day. Oli just needs to find a rotation among the position players to get everyone some playing time.

I don't mind if they play Herrera as the "just like making a trade" guy. He's probably the best all around bat on the team. That WILL be a big deal when he comes back. Walker...not so much.

I learned to stop expecting big deals at the deadline. I'd like to hope some of our guys on their last run here are moved for a good SP prospect, or a good power bat in AA/AAA who might be close.

Glad we don't have many big trade line deals.
