Yes, they needed a rh bat for Colorado and they had a coaches meeting with TLR and discussed that AP would actually play and not sit the bench which would be bad for youngster who should be getting at bats. Also they weirdly played Rockies 6 of first 9 games.

Actually, the Mets came out ahead. They took the money they owed Bonilla and bought an annuity. They essentially are paying Bonilla from the interest.

Here's why Bobby Bonilla collects a $1.19 million paycheck ...
The "Bonilla contract" refers to a deferred payment agreement between former New York Mets player Bobby Bonilla and the team. In 1999, the Mets bought out the remaining $5.9 million of Bonilla's contract, but instead of paying him the lump sum, they agreed to make annual payments of nearly $1.2 million for 25 years, starting in 2011, with 8% interest. This agreement, negotiated by then-owner Fred Wilpon, is why Bonilla still receives a substantial payment from the Mets every July 1, now known as "Bobby Bonilla Day".
Looks like terrible deal for Mets and now owner Cohen. But great deal for Wilpon and Bonilla…

Why would Bonilla accept some extremely low annuity payment from the mets compared to the annuity market rate? For bonilla he could just take his money buy his own annuity at that great rate you say the mets went out and bought one. Not Like he would settle for one less from the Mets than the market rates at the time he could have bought himself with the money. Doubt the players association would have approved such a loss for Bonilla.
A more exciting story, even semi logical, touted by CNN, is that this bonilla money was money Wilpon dumped into Bernie Madoff thinking they could make more from Madoff and pay off Bonilla over time with just part of the Madoff gains.

Also note that 6 mil borrowed at 8 percent for 35 years, would have 537k a year payments paying it back, yet the mets borrowed 6 mil from bobby and pay 1.2 mil a year for 35 years ...which is about a 20 percent interest rate loan, it is just crazy. FYI 30 year mortgage rate in 1999 roughly 7.4 percent.
