Never seen that before.

better than both of them?

Voters liked counting stats. Some still do. They didn't (and shouldn't) vote by WAR totals.

Look at the AL for the same year. Lynn finished fourth, Brett third, and poor Darrell Porter ninth.

Pirates won the world series. Stargell had a good year for the WS champions.

San Diego was a poor team. Didn't give the MVP to a player on a poor team.
