Barrero DFA’d, Cardinals claim Garrett Hampson from the Reds

I don’t remember their name, but there was someone on CT that always wanted the Cardinals to trade for Hampson when he was with the Rockies.

On the plus side Hampson has a 16.7% BB rate this year... on the other hand he also has an 83.3 career avg EV, with a sub-80mph EV this year, which I didn't know was possible.

Upside is his best year came in 2023 with Miami when Brant Brown was his hitting coach.

He plays some outfield also, so I assume he's also the new backup CF too.

Barrero didn’t belong here. I guess he will be remembered as “why was he here”. The one thing I don’t get is of all of the people released this year and the Cardinals did nothing, what was it that made them bite on Garrett Hampson. What did Mo see here that everyone else who has released him didn’t. I’m sure not seeing much.

Hampson is a tually decent at defense while barrero sucked at it as hampson is one of the faster players.in the league.

Expect hampton to just be used as backup ss and cf amdmto otherwise just be a defensive replacement for burleson or a pinch runner in late innings. He serves that role better than barrero who was a below average defender at every.position he played and only had average speed

As I get older and my memory gets worse, I won't remember Barrero at all, likely before the season is even over...

I will remember looking at a guy who just looked like a good hitter and fielder. But he wasn't... Standing at the plate he looked like he should be good...... Then there is Pozo... or Cecil Fielder.... but they hit, at least some. Looks can be deceiving.....

We rag on Burly defense but that play on the net was a good play. His defense in the outfield is better this year

It wasa great play, but the reality is any ball burly lunges for, is a play that a gaster iutfielder gets to quicker and is an easier play for them. Burly does take good routes and decent first jumps which is impkrtant too as we have seen walker get loat in the kutfield even though hes the 2nd gastest player on team, but burly just never be rangy chasing down balls because he just simply isnt fat. He makes the best of it though.

Burly will get some great jumps to make some impressive plays, but likeast year how the metrics liked him at first but then didnt at years end, i think that will happen again with eventually some balls finding holes cuz of his footspeed. I will gladly live with it and take him as a starting outfielder of he hits like this, but having a late game defensive replacement option is still welcome.
