Per Derrick Goold:
Cards sign Garrett Hampson and DFA Barrero.

Very proactive. Dealing well ahead of the deadline.

Hampson's been non-tendered or released by five clubs recently. Do the Cards just need a warm-body rental for now?

Cubs should be worried

I was hoping he was one of those guys that does really well against a club and that club was the Cubs. But alas, he has a career .698 OPS vs the Cubs. His OPS against the Reds is .902 though.

Barrero couldnt hit or field.
Hampson is just as versatile and cant hit either but can at least somewhat field.

This is clearly a DEI hire by the Cardinals. Barrero had too little production and too much melanin.

Taylor Motter?
Just keep Saggese up and call up Siani to spell Scott in CF.

I was wondering why they would drop Barrero for him both are utility guys neither can hit but barrero has much better physical tools but reading about Hampson I guess he is a pretty solid defensive player so it makes sense. If neither can hit take the one that can field. Barrero was pretty bad on defense

Question……why isn’t there a much better internal option ?

Guessing they don't want Saggese to sit on the MLB bench. Hampson is a great candidate to sit while others actually play. Call him the emergency guy.

This move is going to actually cost the Cardinals almost half million dollars. They must have had a clear preference for Hampson over Barrero.

unless you count that game-saving diving catch to his left of a line drive the other night

Hampson is highly regarded by Arenado.
Not sure if that was part of the motivation.
But, I’d seen enough of Barrero. I was intrigued by Barrero but after watching him I realize why he never sticks. High ceiling…. Very low floor!!

Yeah i was rooting for Barrero, was hoping we could at least stash him in Memphis and maybe he figured it out. Reminded me of Joe Mather, just looks like a baseball player but never shined. But ah well

They swapped one versatile bench guy for another.
Hampson more experienced and I guess a better fielder?
Even if Arenado is dealt they still are pretty deep in the IF so Barrero or Hampson is meh.
