Are the Braves that desperate?

Tonight’s starter vs the Marlins is Didier Fuentes. I said who? He’s a literately just turned 20 year old (June 17).

Last year he went 3-6 with a 2.74 ERA in 17 starts in A ball with 98 K’s in 75 IP.

This year, he is 0-7 with a 4.81 ERA over 9 starts between A+, AA, and AAA. He has 48 K’s in 39 IP.

0-1 5.54 ERA over 3 starts in A+
0-5 4.98 ERA over 5 starts in AA
0-1 1.93 ERA over 1 start in AAA

I just am always flabbergasted by some of their decisions in regards to promoting players.

He has elite stuff.

FIP of 2.83 in 2025 which most of us know is a better representation of stuff / talent level than ERA, especially over such a small sample.

I assume that they're targeting about 65 more innings from him this year, they think the stuff might already play in the big leagues, so see if they can get him some of that work where they need help.

He's given up 5 ER in his last 4 losses combined with 23 strikeouts and 4 walks across 18.2 IP.

If a team has an opening in their rotation, and an arm they deem possibly talented enough to fill it, why shouldn't they see what they have?

Aren’t you the guy that wants players to prove it at every level though, earn every promotion? If the Cardinals did this to a pitcher you’d be fine with it? Like promoting a guy from each level after 3 or 5 starts and having them in the MLB when they are just turned 20 years old?

Maybe he has an uncle or dad that will buy 100,000 tickets if he can get a few starts and an honest chance to make the club.

Couple things... just read more, looks like it's a spot start, so probably a lot to do about nothing.

Yes, I like to see promotions earned, that is no secret.

The Braves have been doing this for awhile.

So they’re burning an option on a just turned 20 year old who’s had all of like 6 starts above A+ ball and 9 starts above A ball for a spot start? Seems like a smart move.

Dider didnt have to be protected from rule 5 draft til december 2026. So they likely just burned 2 options years for this year and next that they really didnt have to by adding him to 40 man roster now. Also they might ha e to release someone else on 40 man later in seaspn that they wouldnt have had to if they didnt prematurely add this guy.

I doubt they'll have much heartache over designating Jose Ruiz and his 8.82 ERA / 1.96 WHIP.

Its not about just that- its about permanently taking up a spot. Any time they have to add a new player over this season and next to be on 40 man now, they have to dfa someone else instead of jose ruiz

Unnecessary adding of players leads to later moves like us having to dfa adolis garcia. Or another player they cant protect from rule 5 draft next year. He now also needs to figure things out in next 3 years to stick in majors or he runs out of option years.

Just for a spot start anyone could do
Unnecessary adding of players

Not all teams treat the back end of the 40-man like precious jewels.

I don't understand the parallel to Adolis Garcia. That had nothing to do with something like this.

That's the kind of thing that happens when you have two, count them, 7-game losing streaks.

otoh, they just took three from the Mets with some kickass pitching and one late rally. Their aim is to get to the playoffs and take their chances riding Sale and the two Spencers.

Tonight Fuentes will pitch at his fourth level of the year, and it's still June.

Regardless, would take Braves ownership, FO, and manager over current Cardinal personnel. Very competitive division with very good history of results.
