In the mid-1960’s, the Cardinals acquired from the Mets 3 20 game LOSERS in a row. Following the 1963 season, they traded George Altman and Bill Wakefield to the Mets for Roger Craig. Following the World Series in 1964, the Cardinals traded young lefty Gordon Richardson and young OF Johnny Lewis to NY for Tracy Stallard. Following the 1965 season, they acquired the little lefty Al Jackson (and 3B Charley Smith) for Ken Boyer. Craig, Stallard and Jackson all lost 20 or more games the season before coming to the Cardinals.
Craig spent one year in STL and was mediocre. His biggest contribution was 4 2/3 shutout innings in Game 4. He was traded to Cincinnati for knuckleballer Bob Purkey. Stallard had a fairly solid 1965, but injuries in 1966 ended his career. Jackson went 11-13 in 1966 and 9-4 (including a one hitter in Houston) in 1967. He did not appear in the series and was the PTBNL in the Jack Lamabe deal with the Mets.
