Alcantara - worth keeping an eye on

Last 3 starts show improvement albeit 2 are vs Colorado and Pittsburgh. Marlins are shopping. $17 million this year and '26. Club option @ $21 million in '27.

Can he rebound? Can we afford him at that price? Would Miami pick up part of his salary? What would they ask in return?

My guess is we will bring up an arm or two from Memphis to fill vacancies next season but if Alcantara can rebound that salary is a bargain.

I would definitely keep an eye on him. Definitely a guy I would want back! He is a true ace when at the top of his game. A real leader of a rotation on anf off the field!

paying a pitcher $38 million over the next 2 years, when we've made it known we're lowering payroll....but we want him b/c we want to try and regain what we feel we lost when he was traded. And we'll need to pay the Marlin's hefty price, which means we'll have to let go of several Top 10 prospects. We're finally starting to get out of the basement in Farm Rankings....trading for missed nostalgia will put us back in the basement.

He’s still just 29. And Tommy John surgery, if I recall correctly, often isn’t so gentle to guys immediately after they get back from it. Takes some time to find their game again. He could certainly be worth a flyer to build towards 2026

I don't disagree but it's a club option for '27, we don't know whether Miami would pick up part of the salary and we don't know what they would want.

Worth keeping an eye on him and kicking the tires to see what they will do.

Crav,

Our payroll is already low enough. Not missed nostalgia. I'm simply saying keep an eye on him. If he looks like a guy who is regaining his form, something that takes a bit sometimes after TJ surgery, then that wouldn't be a bad price at all for him. I would take a good Alcantara in a hearbeat.

I'd think about dealing major league pieces for Alcantara. I'd focus on Nootbaar, would even consider selling high on Herrera. I think Miami would covet the opportunity to get a big bat. It's Peter Bendicks, they might even take Burleson.

Throw in a pitcher not named Mathews. Maybe this is the deal you put Hence in.

I don't think you'd be selling high on Herrera. I think Herrera is a legit hitter in the .850+ range.

With our lack of RH thump, I wouldn't be dealing him.

Agree! The Cards may be thinking of a position change for Herrera after this season. Cards have some really good young catchers in the system and the Cards love Pages.

Marmol loves Pages.

Hopefully, Bloom recognizes that Pages is JAG.

If we are trading away prospects, which I think is a terrible idea right now, trade from our strengths and surpluses. Middle infielders and catchers. Sagesse and Crooks for starters.

Not sure it would be mere nostalgia. His FB is still top notch. The Cardinals won’t bother, but it’s a good time to buy low with Alcantara. It might actually make sense for the Cards w/ Mikolas, Matz and Fedde all likely to depart. Depends on what they’re asking.

Thank you.
+.800 OPS guys don't grow on trees.
Looks possible, very possible Herrera is going to be one. Don't trade guys like that while they are cost controlled.
LF is a possibility for him next year, and if he struggles there, the DH is always a fallback.
