Willy Sonny be an All Star?

The guy is certainly making a case for his 4th All Star appearance. After tonight he's 7-1 with a 3.35 era.

Will he continue this type of pitching or is he likely to implode? Is he going to be traded to a contender and bring a nice return? Will he lead the Cards to a surprise playoff appearance?

So many possibilities here, dontcha think?

Right there on the line. One more start before ASB and if it’s like tonight and goes 8-1 and lowers the ERA a little more he will be deserving. I’ll take the playoff appearance too!

Umm I sure hope he has more than one start before the ASB

Yes, and there has always seems to be an anti- Gray faction on CT .. the ones ready to pounce if he has a so-so outing but rarely give him praise when he pitches a game like tonight. Anybody else notice that ?

Yes. I think the "Ace" label and the huge contract make some judge him harshly sometimes. I am guilty of it occasionally. But, I certainly celebrate him deservedly after amazing starts like tonight!

Go Cards. Love beating the LAD!

Oops, wrong month! Guess I got a little ahead of myself...10+ wins and slightly lower ERA gives him a shot. Maybe not a lock, but would be deserving.

Well said ! and respect you for saying you are guilty at times maybe judging him too harshly but you proved in this post that you do 'give credit where credit is due' with tonight's gem

Absolutely. I guess the criticism comes with the high salary, but Gray is meeting and exceeding my expectations. No, he's not Bob Gibson or vintage Chris Carpenter...but he's not Jason Marquis, either.

Yes. All star. More importantly he may be a league level Ace. The reset requires us to get a bat and TOR pitcher in order to become a powers

Maybe Herrera; maybe a new LF. Now does Gray satisfy the LEAGUE LEVEL label so sorely needed.

If so next season we are primed, one year early.

Good stuff

Just to list a few who could/should at this time be ahead of Sonny.

BUT

Plenty of time for him to climb the list and the way he's pitching now that's a possibility.

He will be named to the ASG.

So he is in conversation with the leagues eight best. That’s strong. Is he a league level Ace or a Cardinal Ace.

The way he's pitching now (Last 3 GS: 1.42 ERA/0.76 FiP/ 25 to 2 KO's to Walks/0.95 WHiP) he's both a league and Cardinals ACE.

If he stays hot until pitchers are named, then he's 100% in the conversation.

Right now (IMO) B. Donovan (.314 .380 .450 .830/133 OPS+/4 HR and 24 RBI's in 256 PA's) could be the all-star 2nd baseman but nationally they're pushing K. Marte (.299 .422 .606 1.028/185 OPS+/11 HR and 19 RBI's) but he's only had 154 PA's.

So he is not walking many to any which gives more cushion in a two hit inning.

As for staying hot, if we score five, he very likely will win.

Sonny is a bulldog on the mound. His competitiveness is A+ .
No surprise to his hometown residents of Smyrna, Tenn.
They remember him less for his HS baseball career
And more for him as their Quarterback leading them to the Tennessee state championship.
The guy is a winner.
