Not a coincidence.
Also caught the May 31 shut out.
Gray went 7 scoreless in that one.
And 6.1 scoreless tonight.

There is no doubt he is doing a marvelous job with the pitching staff and calling games. Spectacular. Tonight's Tater is just frosting on the cake!

Gray has thrown 6 to 7 IP and given up 0 runs in 4 of his last 6 games.

Pages caught all four games, but Gray threw most if not all of the pitches.

Ppl talk [shirt] about PP, but the pitching has been cruising since Herrera’s injury in April

Part of my impression of why the pitching may be better with Pages behind the plate is his personality . He seems more outgoing personality . I noticed he interacts with opposing hitters and seems to have a good sense of humor. Not a knock on Herrera but he seems more reserved , quieter type . Even in the dugout when they show camera shots , Pages is mixing it up more with the other players , smiling , joking etc. Think the pitchers (as well as the other players ) embrace his enthusiasm.

He just won what? Catcher of the month. Now he fostered several shutouts. Somebody had to call that game. Why not the catcher.

And he can hit. Our infield defense is best in baseball.

Our up the middle defense is best in baseball.

He certainly does not need to be playing catcher yet on certain days Oli forces him in there.

Long term I hope he can play outfield.

Correct.
Limiting Herrera's appearances behind the dish has been the biggest addition to the STL staff this year.
A better move than any trade for a pitcher would have been!
Too bad he was not moved to another position 2.5 years ago as I was first to analyze and advise.
Good to see his bat be given a chance to contribute elsewhere.
Someone here dubbed him 'The Matador" - which was perfect branding.
Wish I could recall who that was so I could bestow credit where due.
It is also good to see the organization FINALLY begin to make CORRECT BASEBALL DECISIONS.
Still a long way to go in that regard - but allowing Pages to seize the starting job away from Herrera (again) is a start.
(Although I suspect the pitching staff FORCED that decision, rather than The Marmot and Super Slo Mo initiating it.)
Excellent game by Pages once again last night.
Many more are ahead.

Not disagreeing, but WHY? What's wrong with him at DH?

If one of the young minor league catchers does become the FT starter w/equal catching skills + offense, then Pages has done nothing but increase his trade value.

Speaking for myself...maybe I'm too much of a luddite...but I don't like the idea of someone who's a DH and only a DH. I'd be okay with Ivan taking most of the DH at-bats, but I'd like him to be able to passably play a defensive position, too.

I like the idea of being able to use the DH spot for guys who might've tweaked something and need a few games to not be in the field. Or for a young guy who's JUST been called up and hasn't had the time to prepare defensively for that night's game. For example, if Weatherholt was called up in an emergency TODAY...well...he won't have much time to get situated and get to know the infield. So why not DH him, you know?

I realize that the above type situations aren't going to be more than, say, 30 games absolute max. If your DH is an absolute hitter, though, do you want him just limited to DH? Plus, he already plays a demanding position--though not well. Why couldn't he be able to moonlight in the outfield corners or at first base? A little flexibility never hurt anyone.

Anywho...love Pages. Not a great hitter, but certainly seems to be a clutch hitter. And seems up to the task defensively.

I'd bring up guys like Edgar Martinez, Paul Molitor, and Big Papi. But here's the thing...maybe he could play a passable left field. But would he provide speed, athleticism, and throwing you'd like to see from a left fielder? I highly doubt it.

Herrera was born to DH...maybe first base when Contreras is finished.
