It makes no sense to draft a middle infielder at #5

Having Donovan, Winn, Saggese, Gorman and Wetherholt already in the organization. A good middle infielder hitter with the power to be moved to 3B or 1B, maybe. Does Arquette, at 6'5", 220 lbs, fit that description?

So you are saying that if the scouting department rated a player the caliber of Derrick Jeter you would 'pass' on him because he happened to play SS .
Mookie Betts was a high school SS. Would you pass on him too ? Other kids that have played SS have gone on to excellent careers being moved to other positions . Don't think MLB teams dismiss a future talent just because in HS or college he played SS. That's the position most coaches play their most talented player. Your example of Arquette would fit . He could be moved to another spot he is that athletic. A 'bat like his is going to play somewhere. Saw him jack that HR to left center well over the fence. Appears he could have that steady 20-25 HR power in the big leagues.

The San Diego Padres have like 11 former SS’s on their team. Their CFer who was runner up for ROY last year was a former SS who never played a game in CF until he was promoted to the MLB.
Most SS’s, If they can hit, can be moved to another position. And if not they can be traded.
And it will be Bloom making those decisions.

I’m of the school of drafting the best available athlete; or best pitcher available, if you go that route. You can always trade from your surplus, to fill holes in the organization.

BPA...we've been over this time and time again, Shady
You take the best player available on your draft board. The Cards may view HS SS more favorably than anything else.
Don't die on this hill for 3 months like you did with LaViolette.
There's 5 players out there the Cards would be happy with and so should you. So live with it.
============
This didn't need its own thread. There's an entire Draft thread going on right now. There's at least 100 posts with you squawking "LaViolette" on it after every one of my posts. So, I know you know what thread I'm talking about.
--------------
Lastly, we'd be blessed if we took Willits or Holliday. Neither player will be blocked. Outside of Catcher there's 5 or 6 positions each could eventually play.

Yes.
The issue this year is that there are not any clear top-5 bats in the draft... so going for a bat at #5 just because you're excited at the idea of picking a bat that high in the draft is kinda foolish. I hope they don't force the issue by picking a top-20 caliber bat at #5.
They should pick the best available player, and that player -- in THIS PARTICULAR draft -- is definitely a pitcher.... ofc assuming Willits/Holliday already picked.

I don’t think you should ever draft by position you should draft by best player available. If the best player available is at short draft him he can always be traded for a position of need or they can move him to another position

Arquette could be moved to corner outfield.

Shady knows all of this—he’s gotten the same responses on this “topic” countless times before. He’s just trolling/spamming to get attention.

Agreed. This high in the draft, get a stud and figure out where to put him later.

that would be unfortunate, but it's a strategy...and one that could work. This draft is horrible for Top Tier Talent...but it's loaded with B Tier and C Tier talent. They could go the Irish, Houston route and save 25% of slot, and use that for hard to sign HS players with high upside with the next 3 picks....the Brewers and Reds do this all the time. Even the Royals have done it. It's not a bad strategy, you just have to pick the good prospects, not necessarily those who fall to you....but an actual game plan in mind, your picks made before the draft.

Well, there is the future to consider. I k ow ylu think all prospects should be rushed up in 1-2 years but truthfully it could be 3-4 years before he arrives full time and many of our players will have moved on by then.
Gorman may not be here beyonfmd this year and likely isnt a 2b long term.
Donovan with
Donovan if we resign him, still night not be able to keep up with 2b in his mid 30s as he doesnt have the ideal mi body type.
Winn isnt locked up long term. Saggese and wetherholt havent proven anything yet.
Also a guy who can play ss can always be moved to easier positions.
