What happened to the Orioles?

They looked like a juggernaut in the making the last few years. After tanking for multiple seasons, they had a winning record in 2022. Won 101 games in 2023. And won 91 last year. they are absolute trash this year. That's a short window for all that tanking. I don't see any way they turn it around this year.

Brandon Hyde won manager of the year in 2023, but got fired a week ago.

Cowser been injured. They lost Corbin Burnes. Let Santander walk (good decision, he's negative WAR this season)

Henderson a little down, Adley Rutchsman down quite a bit.

What other reasons are there for the suckage?

They are a Jugger O'Naught this year.

It seems what happened is they didn't get enough pitching. They made it work with a lot of mediocre pitchers the last few years. They made the deal for Burnes but they failed to keep him. They also haven't extended any young players. They've also held onto some players longer than they needed to forcing them to use young players out of position.

A short window for all the tanking.

That's why it might better to let destiny carry you, rather than depending on the winning to occur in the years you try to force/plan it.

Funny game. We lose two in a row to Cinn and Nets. Neither contested. Since we are 16-4. Just keep Baltimore down 2-3 more days.

Pitching. In today’s game, it changes every season.

Tanking doesn't guarantee much.

Pitching (27th) and hitting (25th).

Signing TON for $50M didn't help.

Team ERA only behind the Rockies
while only scoring 3.85.

They are still a good team and will be competitive in the future. They just aren't good right now.

It starts with their pitching. They lost Corbin Burnes, but still had a couple of good pitchers (Rodriguez and Eflin). They had a couple good prospects who were near ready and took a stop-gap approach to filling in the rest. The good pitchers and prospects got hurt and the stop-gaps were bad.

As a result, their offense starts games out 5-0, 6-0, 7-0 and is always working from behind. They have some really good hitters, but they are pressing big time. Winning is contagious and so is losing. No one is having any fun there.

They can't get on base and only hit an average amount of homers.

They allow more hits than innings pitched and the second most hits per nine innings while giving up the most homers.

Their defensive efficiecy is below average.

Think that covers most of it.

Basically, their positon players are a team of young guns who have never really experienced failure on a baseball diamond. It seems like they are not yet sure what hit them.

The sad part for them is one of their competitors (Yankees) signed Max Fried, and another competitor (Red Sox) traded for Garret Crochet. They had the resources (financial and trade capital) to do both of those things. Ahhh, the what if...

A little irony with your sign on 8)

They hit on a lot of players, as many as can be wished for really.
Teams having it all come together, a little difficult, have to get it right where you spend.

Seattle was a perfect trade partner with them for a while.

So just about the time we might get a little giddy about our team, a stretch like the Orioles are having could humble us back quite a bit.
You just never know.
Enjoy the good times when they're happening. Btw, it's been happening lately.
