Tonight’s Phillies starter, Cristopher Sánchez, offers a great case study when evaluating Matthew Liberatore’s development.
Sánchez posted a 4.36 ERA and 1.43 WHIP in the minors. Originally signed by the Rays at age 17, he was traded to the Phillies at 24. Philadelphia moved him quickly to the majors, where he initially struggled—recording ERAs of 4.97 and 5.63 in limited action over his first two seasons. But by age 26, he put it all together and has been a strong contributor ever since.

Wait, how did the Phillies win a trade against the Rays? I thought the Rays are unstoppable in talent evaluation.

They drafted an even better LHSP the next season, he was drafted by the Rays in the 1st round (16th) of the 2018 MLB June Amateur Draft

The Philles being able to get both Sanchez and Luzardo is a pretty big bummer imo, as the Cards had opportunity to reasonably trade for either one of these a couple years ago I thought, but obviously IDK the details of what it would have taken.

Nor the certainty that they would become so good so quickly. We're just lucky they weren't taking council from CT and traded Libby.
