Doing some reading this morning, I came across some articles about a St. Louis born and raised ballplayer who made the big leagues with tremendous expectations. I remember him only from baseball cards I collected as a kid. He passed away about 2 years ago. Here is one of the most interesting and informative articles I read about him:

Thought I would get some response to this post, especially from old timers like Old Red who probably saw the guy play. I also realized later a different David Nicholson invented the famous "1843" Bourbon whiskey at his grocery store in St. Louis. I thought it was always a Kentucky bourbon.

He was a two-outcome player. He either homered or struck out.

Yes, held the MLB record for most strikeouts in a season until Bobby Bonds broke it in early seventies. He also hit one of the longest HR of all time out of Comiskey Park. He also homered off Sandy Koufax!!

You are reaching a long way into the past. I was 2 years old when he played his last game...Never had heard of the guy before.

I attended my first MLB game in 1963, but I did not remember the guy, even though I could have seen him play with Houston or Atlanta in the late 60's.
