Don’t know if this has been discussed here. Cards going with 3 catchers which means Ivan gets at bats as the DH.

Good. He's not a major league player.

As expected, the #STLCards optioned 1B/DH Luken Baker to Triple-A. The move makes room on the roster for returning catcher Iván Herrera, who missed a month with a bone bruise in his left knee. The Cards will likely keep three catchers: Herrera, Pedro Pagès and Yohel Pozo.

I think that is a signal that Herrera will be used primarily as a DH. Both Pages and Pozo deserve to be playing at this level. Besides Pages has shown the Cards he can even fill in at 2B when necessary. LOL!

I feel bad for this kid...

Let's not pretend he's had multiple shots and failed. He's 28 and has had a grand total of 160 ABs spread out over 3 seasons. 34 ABs this season and he has a higher OPS than Burly, Walker, or Gorman.

I'm not saying he's Boog Powell...but he just hasn't really had a legit shot to either succeed or fail in The Show.

Oh no doubt. Coming off a bad bone bruise, catching may be difficult and provide an opportunity to aggravate said injury.

Herrera was born to either DH or play LF. We don't need (at this time) a left fielder!

Thought he was out of options. Guess not.

I'm good with him staying at DH if that is the route they choose. At least for now. Pozo and Pages are shaping up to be a decent catching duo and the organization seems very hesitant to commit to Herrera as an everyday catcher. Combine that with him coming back from the knee injury, I'm cool with him there.

Now, if Burleson starts stealing ABs from him at DH, we are gonna have some problems.

This times 10. He will eventually get traded or leave as a free agent and some team will give him the same chance guys like Walker and Gorman have gotten. He certainly can fill the role as an everyday 1st baseman or DH if given the chance to get into a groove. He may only have a 3 or 4 year window of success as a late bloomer, but I predict he will somewhere. A shame our system is so beholden to contracts and manager favorites.

If the Cardinals are to be a good team, then he's never seen in StL again.

Now slot I Hererra in as the near fulltime DH (although I fear Oli and his love for Bumbles will eat into Ivan's AB's).

So true. Hope he can extricate himself from this organization. Given regular ABs, he might have a MLB career of a few years (instead of several).

Strange take. Glad the org made the right call. Hopefully Herrera can pickup where he left off.

Extricate? More like plead for another team.
