Arizona Diamondbacks Reportedly Seeking Bullpen Help in Wake of Injuries
With A.J. Puk and Justin Martinez both on the injured list, the Arizona Diamondbacks could look to the trade market to find another reliable relief pitcher.
Sam Connon | 23 Hours Ago

Washington Nationals closer Kyle Finnegan and St. Louis Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley, both of whom were All-Stars in 2024, have been at the center of several trade rumors since last summer. If the D-backs are serious about contending in a stacked NL West, it may take acquiring one of those elite relievers for them to hang around in the Wild Card race

The Arizona Diamondbacks entered the season with LHP A.J. Puk and RHP Justin Martinez as their co-closers.
Today, Puk was placed on the 60-day IL and Martinez was placed on the 15-day IL.
They are actively looking for bullpen help.

And here's more........

Could the Cardinals and Diamondbacks link up in a trade?

Given that it's only May, making any meaningful upgrades via trade will be hard. Teams typically wait to trade their valuable assets until more teams come calling at the MLB trade deadline. Back-end of the bullpen types, in particular, are some of the more sought-after positions at the deadline, and it would be foolish for a team not to wait until they can get full value for a key player via trade.

That being said, one name that we can keep an eye on is St. Louis Cardinals' Ryan Helsley. With rumors growing by the day, Helsley is likely as good as gone once the deadline approaches. I don't foresee the Cardinals jumping the gun on the trade market, unless they get an offer they can't refuse. The Diamondbacks are in win-now mode, and a team like the Cardinals will likely prefer to trade Helsley outside of the division instead of to rival teams such as the Cubs, who are also bullpen needy.

It takes two to tango and that would require Mo doing actual work.

Ugh why can't Bloom be in charge for this season...

The Cardinals have a chance to trade several players at the deadline this season, just as last season / offseason. We saw what happened then. Basically nothing.

Dbacks need to think:

Are they then better than LA? No!
SD? Probably not.
SF? Maybe not.

So no reason for them to do anything.

It would be smart if BDWjr has instructed Mo to let C. Bloom handle all trades since it will be his team the new players (likely prospects) will be playing on.

One thing at a time.
He's still "working" on moving NA.

I definitely disagree, IMO they are the 2nd most talented team in the NL West. And right now baseball reference has them at the best odds to win a WS in the division.

Last year their offense scored the most runs in baseball. They are 4th this year. And they have a good 1-3 in the rotation in Burnes-Gallen-Pfaadt.

Is it not equally early to concede when they spent
fully knowing the other teams in their division?

^^^THIS^^^

The Dbacks were in the 2023 World Series, they're in WIN NOW MODE and they have a strong chance of going back this season too.

I also don't know the status of the guys they've got on the IL, but if they're capable of returning and pitching to form, Helsley gives them a bullpen to where their starters have to pretty much just get to 5 IP, and that's a wrap, provided they hit enough.

Snakes could be the AL west version of Philadelphia the past few years. One of those rosters that plays up come October, but squeaks in.

60 day IL for AJ Puk, 15 day IL for co-closer Justin Martinez w/ shoulder fatigue that led to a loss of velo.

I believe they are better than SanFran. Most likely 2 wild card teams from the west and one from the east with none from the central. They will lose Gallen and Kelly next year so they should be in for this year.

Agree. I could see AZ trying to get a closer for a bargain. Cant see them parting with quality when they might be 3rd or 4th best team in their division.
