How Many of You Actually Expected Them To Contend?

They extended the manager so that he wouldn't have to worry about wins and losses. The POBO named his own exit date so the he didn't have all the chatter about being fired. They won 83 games last year when they overperformed to get there. They let two solid starting pitchers, a solid relief pitcher, and a MOTOB (albeit an underperforming one) from that team. They added only Phil Maton to the roster. They told us upfront that this was a reset year. They told us that the young players would get runway and priority in playing time. In spite of all of this, some of you somehow thought they were going to compete for... Compete for what? Yet everyday we see posts about how we stink, fire Oli, sit _____, send _______ to Memphis, 'DFA ________. The Cardinals don't stink. They aren't bad. They are a young, developing team. Young teams are inconsistent. There will be stretches where they look great- others, not so much. Let go of the angst if you can and enjoy watching them develop, This is going to go on all season.

I predicted 78-84 before season started.
I think that should be reasonably accurate.

Looks like as good a guess as any.

That's some big time optimism. I've noticed for years that you haven't let the Cardinals shortcomings ruin your day. Gotta admire that.

A number of posters predicted wins in the mid to high 80s. Several predicted 90.

I don't think I will ever understand what they based any of that on.

I based it on the fact that they weren’t supposed to be good. Reverse psychology

Gray, Fedde, and Pallante at the top of the rotation.
Walker and Gorman rebounding.

I expected them to lurk near the bottom of the division, and that is exactly where they are.

Bill the 3rd, made it clear they wouldn't be spending.

A reset this ain't. It's hard to expect much from what appears more like a throw away season.

I'm curious to see what happens next year.

The vast majority here predicted .500 or below in the preseason thread. Some got a little over excited after the Twins series, but for the most part the record is what most expected so far. Although the team has played a lot better than I expected.

I predicted a win total in the mid-to-high 70's.
With the potential to mildly surprise and win 83-84 wins if several factors aligned.
But I have specifically stated the that mild surprise would only be possible under one very specific scenario: the team would need to start slow enough that The Marmot would be fired somewhere around the 30-game mark, leaving sufficient time for a competent replacement to maximize the team's abilities and lead to a small turnaround.

Realistically no.
