Re: Unpopular Opinions
Agree on Donovan.
Winn’s defense makes that comparison close, but Saggese may prove to be the better bat.
I still believe Contreras will have a good year and I’m not convinced Herrera is quite as good as he looked early on, but it’s certainly closer than any of us thought a year ago.

Re: Unpopular Opinions
I suppose it could come down to Donovan playing mostly corner OF and they could be in competition for PT. Right now Donovan will also play IF and DH.
With all due respect Saggese is not better than Winn. Don’t get me wrong I like Saggese but Winn is the superior SS and while I hope Saggese continues to hit we’re still talking about a small sample size.
And Herrera and Contreras are not in competition either.
Looks like they have decided to move WC to 1B/DH to preserve his bat.
They also have a number of catchers in the system.
Herrera is first up and he can clearly hit. Will his defense measure up?
If not we could see him shifted to a different position or DH?

Not to play devil's advocate but, one point to consider, age 33 is when Nado's bat fell from grace. Willy turns 33 next month. And didn't a lot of people comment that he appears to have put on a lot of muscle weight this season?JohnnyMO wrote: ↑20 Apr 2025 08:34 am Agree on Donovan.

As a guy who once, idioticly, went from 195 to 235, using banned substances, I can tell you the biggest thing you notice is your loss of range of motion. I'd like to believe the Long Con may soon be over ...

1. Obviously, Donovan is better than Walker. Who knows what the future may bring?stlcardinals wrote: ↑20 Apr 2025 08:29 am Donovan>Walker

I said what I said.
2. Saggese has had a couple of great weeks at the plate. Doesn't make him better. Factor in Winn's superior speed, range, and throwing arm...I'm simply not convinced.
3. Contreras has been awful, no doubt. And Herrera is a legit hitter. But maybe we let the season play out a bit on this one as Contreras has a demonstrably better track record.
It's not that you're wrong, but a 3 or 4 week sample size is way too early for most judgements. There's something a little Shady about this post!

I want Saggese as SS as well. Love Herrera catching and DH and Donny’s bat in the lineup at all times.stlcardinals wrote: ↑20 Apr 2025 08:29 am Donovan>Walker

What Saggese lacks in those raw abilities he makes up in transition and footwork. He has natural ability to sling it and his bat this year is superior.Monsieur De Treville wrote: ↑20 Apr 2025 08:42 am1. Obviously, Donovan is better than Walker. There can be made a case for both.

Re: Unpopular Opinions
They're two totally different players, so it's a weird comparison. Room on this team for both. I like Winn's speed, range, athleticism, and arm, while loving Saggese's bat. Kinda like comparing Ozzie & Cal Jr. Two different types of player.Alex Reyes Cy Young wrote: ↑20 Apr 2025 08:49 amWhat Saggese lacks in those raw abilities he makes up in transition and footwork. I think it's probably best to let the season play out before anointing either a future All Star.

Re: Unpopular Opinions
Winn is a mich better ss. But it shouldnt be about saggese vs winn as much as saggese vs gorman and burleson.stlcardinals wrote: ↑20 Apr 2025 08:29 am Donovan>Walker

Re: Unpopular Opinions
Many here claimed Saggese was just a utility-type player. Do they still feel that way? Saggese's best defensive position is second base. I hope his hitting success results in him getting a legit chance to be the regular there. As much as I like him at #2 in the lineup. Saggese might be the better option on the team at #5, right now. At least vs LHP.Wattage wrote: ↑20 Apr 2025 12:01 pmWinn is a mich better ss. Re: Unpopular Opinions
I think Winn can still be a generational SS & Saggese is the player you make a spot for. I like them both & think they could be a Trammel/Whitaker type combo if left alone.
Re: Unpopular Opinions
That would be oh so nice. Both Winn and Saggese are just 23. They could be a cornerstone middle infield combo for many seasons to come, indeed.
