Could have been an easy DP though if the 1B tagged Cruz first.

Pham should be reprimanded for not running it out. Cruz was in no man's land.

Man it would have been cool for that to be a DP!

Well looked like more of a freak play. Pham wasn’t not hustling, but he was seeing the play in front of him.

In his defense it looked like a catch. That being said, man I do f'n HATE Tommy Pham now. Dude is a mediocre, over the hill, hanging on by a thread vet, unless, of course, HE'S PLAYING AGAINST THE CARDINALS.

Other than hitting that slammer in his first AB last season, he was horrific for the 2 months we had to watch his punk *ss as a Cardinal once again.

Agree that it was simply a freak play. Runner on first also believed it was a catch, and when he returned to first it had to be obvious to Pham that someone called it a catch.

The 1b did tag cruz but he was standing on 1b and therefore safe. Even though he has to advance to 2b for pham to take 1b he cant be tagged out while he is on the base.

It actually wouldnt have made much a difference if pham ran it out, they would just throw to 2b to get cruz out.

Right. The suggestion of reprimanding is foolish. It's not like he cost them an out.
Now, if the runner was on second? Might be different.

Finally, someone points out the obvious. I'll take Cruz on 1st base rather than Pham. Yeah, it was a weird play but not a bad result.

I heard what the ump said but I've never heard it said before. There are lots of incidents (usually with two runners on the same base) where a runner is on a base and is tagged out. That runner is in a force out situation. He HAS to run to second unless the batter is retired before HE is. It did look like he was tagged before Pham got to first. I'm not so sure it was called right. I know, I know, MLB umpires are forking infallible.

It’s a force out situation though, so unless he steps on 1B before the tag, the runner would be out. Otherwise on an easy double play ball the runner on first should just go back to first before they are forced out at 2B.

He was tagged before the base. On review of the rules you are correct and the ump called it wrong.
