In the dying days of NBC's "Midnight Special", when the network geniuses thought wee-hours viewers wanted to hear see and panel discussions instead of actual music, Bruce Vilanch was introduced to TV audiences on one 1980 episode, resembling a morbidly obese, effeminate dwarf Muppet with Sally Jesse Raphael's glasses, charged with making the discussions funny.
They were not, as viewers wondered, "Who's the freak?". He never returned.
