Kirkwood High's Nikki Glaser Hosting GGs Sunday: Career Launch Pad? Or the Next Jo Koy?

Several major entertainment show hosts have been lisping and preening lately about Nikki Glaser's upcoming gig hosting the Golden Globes on CBS Sunday evening.

Several sites have described her as even ruder than Ricky Gervais; that's OK so long as she's funny....which Jo Koy definitely was NOT when he totally bombed last year as host --- then, during his DOA monologue, blaming the writers --- when the GGs returned to network TV after the Hollywood Foreign Press Association was shamed by their own ineptitude and lack of integrity.

Because it's Dick Clark Productions behind the show, it's always an entertaining SHOW....despite the fact that the Globes themselves have all the showbiz influence, heft, and gravitas of a paperweight...which is where many of those cheap little bowling trophies end up. It's the first of what seems like about 1200 movie awards galas before the Oscars :roll: , so if you're nominated, your bills for dressing up and flying to all these events will almost match your last movie paycheck.

But, it can still be worth watching if you're, for some godforsaken reason, watching that instead of the biggest (most popular American sport, since we're banned here from using the f-word) game of the year at 7:15 CST on NBC:

Unlike the Oscars, both movies and TV shows are awarded;
Both movie and TV stars are in attendance;
Several are drinking at their tables, or wish they could were they not in fear of the TV cameras catching them sloshed;
Unlike the Oscars, there is not a 90-minute block of obscure awards absolutely nobody west of Los Angeles cares about.

The funniest moment of the night will be when they announce "The Substance" and its stars as best (in a) Comedy nominees. At that moment, Glaser should start spewing gallons of blood from the stage, depending upon how successful her high-profile hosting gig went.

Her career is well launched. She has a successful stand up career. She is the future of roasts and will always have a role, especially once Jeff Ross heart explodes. I doubt whatever she does on a meaningless award show that people don’t care about will matter to her career trajectory.

I've written here for years about the motley crew that comprises the sorry-@$$ Hollywood Foreign Press Association, whose GG votes are purchased by studio junkets, but tonight the tabloid Page Six (credible?) Is reporting that the new owners of the organization are only allowing the HFPA voting members into a TV viewing room at the Beverly Hilton, not into the awards ballroom.

Here's the review by L. A. Times media critic Robert Lloyd, of the show and of Nikki's hosting performance:

Checked her 'highlights'. Its basically chick humor. But I'm not a chick.

Tell you who is funnier than sheet though, and IS a chick. Ali Wong :

She was generally funny. If her mission was not to melt down like Koy, and she definitely accomplished that. The Diddy jokes were tone-deaf, but everything else seemed to go over well.

Caught her opening monologue. She was pretty funny. I take it all back.

I finally got around Monday evening to watching the GGs...and Nikki Glaser was TERRIFIC!

Saying she rated Nicole Kidman's steamy "Babygirl" two fingers up??? WHOA! A lot of dead-on zingers, cutting but not cruel.

Given Zoe Saldana's reaction an̈d acceptance speech, I sure hope she doesn't win the Oscar, or they'll need to have an ambulance onstage.

She was on Stern today and told the jokes she couldn’t on air last night. I find some of her stand up to be hit and miss but when she’s on, like this material or when she’s roasting she’s comedy gold. For those of you on the fence check out some of her roast clips. Not just the Brady roast. Find the rob lowe and or Bruce Willis roast clips.

Here's a breakdown of that Stern interview...

I'd forgotten about this joke:

“Wicked, Queer, Nightbitch — these are not just words Ben Affleck yells when he orgasms. These are some of the incredible movies nominated tonight.”

:lol: :lol: :lol:

Nikki very wisely road-tested her GGs monologue at L.A. clubs during the holidays, so they were refined and ready when the national TV cameras rolled. She's unusual in that she's also very TV-friendly easy on the eyes; a rarity among female standups (Joan Rivers; Phyllis Diller [ask your grandparents]; Roseanne Barr; Paula Poundstone; Kathy Griffin, et al).

Clark is still (upset) about all those times Phyllis Diller was allowed on Hollywood Squares without a bag over her head. Some fires burn forever.

But good news for Nikki Glaser. I'm sure she'll be glad that she made his updated list of Women Good-Looking Enough to Be Seen in Public.

The funny thing about Phyllis is that she could have sported quite a nice figure, a fact she ruthlessly disguised - actually a very attractive lady, and hugely talented - very accomplished pianist.

I hear "The Brutalist", GG winner for best drama, opens in a few theaters Jan. 23rd. It runs 3.5 hours, including an intermission. I prepared for it's length by sitting through writer/director/producer Brady Corbet's nearly 2-minute acceptance speech.

If it wins Oscars....you are forewarned.

Yet....no GGs for "Anora"? Let that be a lesson for studios NOT bestowing free studio junkets, wining/dining, and luxurious week-long hotel stays for the hairdressers, insurance salemen, and Subway Sandwich Artists who comprise the HFPA.
