Did anyone catch this rather brilliant British series ? Based upon the extremely volatile time in Britain/Europe in the early 16th century, when the reformation broke out - featuring characters Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn, Cardinal Wolsey, Thomas Cromwell, Lord Norfolk, etc.

Stellar Cast - a fun way to see history dramatized. They played rough back then.

I know the book Wolf Hall was very big.

I recently rewatched the Tudors so I’m not up for another series from that era especially since I’ve already seen Thomas Moore go through [shirt] one time. But I think I would like this production.

Thomas Cromwell is the central character, played by the very accomplished Mark Rylance, an actor in the stoic tradition of the great Henry Fonda. Cromwell himself was an astoundingly accomplished fellow - the son of an alehouse proprietor - i.e. a step up from a serf, he became a mercenary and fought on the continent, learned about four languages, became an Italianate aesthete, developed trade relations in the cloth business across Europe, came back to England & taught himself law, was elevated by Wolsey, and ultimately became the seconf most powerful man in England (obviously his ultimate undoing). Led the way on dispossessing RC lands/assets into Henry's pocket, ran policy, arranged kingly marriages. The one to Anne of Kleves was his downfall.

Its not that sexy, the music is thankfully subdued - pacing, sets, costumes, writing, acting all first rate - a series mainly for the history buffs. The 16th century was quite a time to be alive, to try to stay alive.

I started a thread on this years ago, when it was first broadcast on PBS. Outstanding series and subject, introduced me to the great Mark Rylance.
